Sheaths, or, how I carry my SAK's
on: November 14, 2009, 05:30:20 AM

The pic above gives one an idea of how I carry my SAK's.

The left 2 I use to carry my Champion.

The pouch on the left is a Brigade Quartermaster's large 3-way pouch: verticle or horizontal belt, or ALICE clip attachment.  This one is new, never used, but a spare.  The one I actually use to carry it not shown, but the same as the new one.  I left the hangtag to show folks who made it and where to get it.  I have used this type of pouch to carry a Champion since early 1987, but in woodland camoflage (still have them!!).  This is the pouch I use to carry my Champion when in uniform, wearing ACU's.

The other pouch is how I carry the Champion when wearing "street clothes".  I got it from Smokey Mountain Knife Works.  Just a large cordura pouch, and many Victorinox bubble packaged knives (i.e. Swiss Champ, Huntsman) come with this pouch.  They last around 3-4 years and they wear out.

The pouches on the right side are how I carry One Hand Treckers, GAK, or 2008 Soldier.  The middle right pouch is same as pouch described above, but longer for the 111mm knives.  Pouch on the right is an ACU MOLLE pouch I got at clothing sales on the base.  Fits the 111mm knives perfect, and MOLLE is a plus!!!!.

I still prefer the belt hanger approach personally :)

But Vic sheaths usually are bombproof :tu:
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

for 4 or 5 layer SAKs I use this pouch;

I have the same pouch but in the larger size for my Champion or Swiss Champ.  Anything smaller and I tend to pocket carry it.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

I think I probably missed that thread if there was one?  Can you link me up or do you have any pic's of that
method of carry?  I just might give it a try for some of my Sak's and various other knives.

thanks,
sean

I do not like leather sheaths.  They mildew and rot, as I am outside alot.  Ballistic nylon, esp. of padded, work for me.

I find the recent leather Vic sheaths to be lacking.  Vecro eventually wears out after 3 years or so of continuous carry.  Why the Vic leather sheaths of today use Velcro is strange to me.  I like the Swiss Tool ballistic nylon sheath, uses a snap button to secure it.

As bizarre as it sounds, I use a Leatherman Bit kit nylon sheath for my Cybertimer 41.  It also holds a SwissChamp or Supertimer.

The tool fits snuggly and it wears on the belt well too.  :tu: :tu:

I have a Kershaw pouch for my 91mm SAKs (didn't like they look/cost of the Vic ones), but since I don't usually wear a belt, it sits in my pile awaiting use  :twak:

Has anyone tried any of the Zermatt pouches? They look more durable than some of the others.
It looks like they have a snap rather than velcro.

I've always been a pocket carrier myself, but those leather pouches look pretty nice.

Yup, I use an xl zermatt pouch for my swisschamp. Bombproof, with a snap rather than velcro. Personally, I too hate the velcro and get a few years use until the velcro no longer works. I wish Vic would use snaps on everything, but I guess it does make us come back from time to time for repeat sales.

I use a variety of carry methods.

The favorite method is a paracord lanyard. It works perfectly for carrying a Farmer or Wenger Standard Issue in my back pocket, or even a 4 or 5 layer SAK in the front pocket of a pair of cargo pants. No SAK gets lost on the end of a paracord lanyard. And if the lanyard doesn't reach what I'm cutting, the swivel clip makes it easy to detach the knife temporarily.

For carrying medium thickness SAKs, I often use a Vic belt hanger. Very convenient and they look good too.

For my Swisschamps, I prefer a leather sheath. For urban use, I like the slick looking Vic black sheath. It's well constructed, and the swivel clip as most convenient.

My Swsschamp needs a more secure connection outdoors, so I use a home made leather sheath. High quality leather, heavy rivets, belt loop and a snap closure. The sheath is very small, so as not to get snagged on tree branches and such.

Thanks. It gets a lot of use. Not nearly as bulky as a Vic pouch.

Can you guide me as to where I can learn to make that paracord lanyard, I like it?
