Sheath for PowerAssist
on: December 15, 2009, 08:20:30 AM
I just got a SOG PowerAssist (the B66) as an early Christmas gift. It’s a pretty nice tool, and seems like something I will enjoy having. Currently I usually just have a Flash I with me, and I love the assisted opening on it, so I hope the PowerAssist’s will also work out well. Anyhow, it came with a Nylon vertical holder, which makes for a nice case, but a pretty crappy way to carry the thing. I’m looking for a horizontal sheath, and after reading some of the posts here and doing my own Googleing, I’ve come up with the following possibilities:

http://www.rjtaylor.net/products/knife/sheath.htm
http://sogknives.com/store/MP.html
http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=187&idcategory=0

And though not a horizontal sheath, this one looks nice as it appears to ride higher so as not to always be in the way when sitting in a car seat:

Are there any new sheaths that I might also want to consider? Are any of the ones I just listed ones you would suggest I NOT get?

The last sheath you got there does ride pretty high but it is a quality sheath. The others I have no clue about but I do want the SOG MOLLE and the Maxpedition one.

I like the MOLLE pouch from Tasmanian Tiger (only vertical carry) but sometimes it can ride a little low.

There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

It's not like I'm humping it through a swamp everyday, so I hesitate to get something as beefy as the one you pictured or the Maxpedition one I linked to. I'm hoping for something that is as small as possible. If I had a sewing machine, I'd be tempted to make my own out of two elastic loops or something.

If you don’t want anything beefy or you want to carry the tool concealed/discreetly and horizontally then I would think that the SOG MOLLE pouch would be your best choice, I think that you would like the one that I got with my BO Powerlock

The Nylon pouch (large alternative) you just linked to was another I considered. Based on the numbers on SOG's website though, the Molle pouch from SOG is a bit smaller. Do you know if it really does take up less space in person?

I have the smaller MOLLE sheath and for me it's a good carry option for my Powerlock. Not bulky at all. I would recommend it for your PowerAssist.

I have never used or seen the MOLLE pouch so I don't know. But the nylon pouch is much better than the leather one when it comes to beef factor and you can horizontal carry the nylon one.

But the MOLLE looks good also.

You are welcome, and please, tell us how you are getting along with the Powerassist.

I haven't had much chance to use it, since I don't carry it with me currently (due to the holder it came with). However, just messing with it on my desk, I like it. My two complaints are:

1) The rivet v-cutter gets caught on the can opener/screwdriver next to it when closing. Easy to overcome, but sort of an obvious mistake I would have thought would have been caught by SOG. I can't really see the point of the v-cutter as it doesn't do anything scissors/knife can't do, but is more limited. I've order the scissors with the new holder, and I'll probably swap that out.

2) I love the power assisted straight blade, but I don't think I will ever use the serrated blade. It's too difficult to open one handed for me (as a righty) and opening it with two hands defeats the purpose of the assisted open feature. Plus, I don't know why anyone would need two types of blades with the assisted opening feature. One makes sense, but I think the space used for the second could be put to better use with more tools.

3) I know I said 2, but I thought of one more. The B66 comes with a can opener/small screw driver, a bottle opener/medium screw driver, and a large screw driver. I can't for the life of me figure out the point of including this "large screw driver" as it is the same size as the "medium" and includes no extra function (it's just a screw driver). I guess SOG can't even justify it's existence as the description page for it says: "Can't decide between a straight or serrated blade? then get the best of both worlds with our 3 inch half-serrated blade component." Hum...

Has any one here come up with a clever replacement for the "large screw driver"? And what do ya'll use the v-cutter for?

I got rid of the v-cutter, that's what I did with it.  :P Think the large screwdriver as a small pry bar, or paint can opener.

Or replace the large screwdriver with the awl.

What does the awl do that the tip of the knife and the Phillips driver can't?

I would honestly have more use for one of the punch-down tools or something from the Paladin PowerPlay. Too bad they are all silver...

I see a few members of this forum have made custom tools, have any of them made custom tool parts to compliment the ones SOG makes? Not that I can think of anything in particular that is missing from the SOG lineup, but I'm sure there is someone out there who wants an earwax scoop or security bit driver in the PowerLock/PowerAssist.

PS: Anyone want my old (and by old, I mean one week old and never used) Large Nylon holder from SOG? I'll be posting it in the for sale section, but figured I'd give those who helped me out here first dibs?

The awl is good for punching when you don't want to break the tip of your blade.

I can take the Nylon holder if you don't want it? How much do you want for it?

Since it's brand new, how about $8.00 + free shipping (assuming you don't want it mailed to Antarctica)? That's the same price as directly from SOG and cheaper than anything on eBay.

Oh, is that what the Norwegian flag and "Norway" mean?

Anyhow, based on USPS shipping it looks like it would be about $10 fro shipping. If you provide me with an address I can get you a exact rate from several carriers.

I had a deal going once with a guy and when he got my address he broke the deal of since he didn’t know I was Norwegian and didn’t want to do international shipping. PM on the way.
