Rough Rider?
on: November 06, 2009, 10:37:38 PM
Rough Rider sounds like a name for a condom. Any how i just bought a yellow Stockman from ebay for 10 bucks. It look great in the pic. I hope it is as good as it looks.
I think Alcohol, Tabacco and Firearms should be a convenience store, not a government agency.

Mike 56,

The Rough Rider's are very inexpensive but excellent quality import slipjoints. I own dozens of them and for the money they are the best bang for the buck going in traditional pocketknives. But take them for what they are.

They all don't come flawless, some might have small F&F issues but overall they generally come with real good QC. I own examples that costed a few dollars and came put together as good as some of my much more expensive brands.

They do a pretty good heat treat on their steel too.

Mike,

Like I said they all don't come 100% perfect but they are generally of real good construction. But I have gotten some pretty flawless examples. Here is one of my real good ones.............

Rough Rider 4" closed Dogleg Whittler in genuine Stag. Virtually seamless throughout, clean mirror polish throughout, excellent blade grinds and razor sharp edges, solid backsprings with real good snap, zero blade play on any of the blades, matchstriker pulls on all three blades, grooved nickle/silver bolsters......the Stag scales ain't bookmatched but they are decent, and are real Stag. But the best part really is the thing is built tight and without gaps...........

Excellent fit and finish throughout, and in real Stag.......and I got this for under $10.00 NIB!  :tu:

Those Rough Riders look great. Thanks for the pics. I am sure i will be happy with mine. If it is not perfect that will be fine i am not really that picky.

Jumping in to say I've bought some Rough Rider Seconds before ($4 each!) and for the life of me couldn't figure out was wrong with them. Well, except for the word Second printed on one of the blades. :D
Got those frog legs.

I've only had a problem with one RR...a Marlinspike knife which I fixed myself. They're inexpensive and I'm not afraid to do naughty things to them...like re-profile the blades into wharnies  :D

Freudian Frog,

Did those RR's marked "seconds" you got happen to be scaled in synthetic Malachite?

Spork,

I always liked that rehandle you did to that Marlin Spike. They have released another new Marlin Spike just recently if you are not aware, it's in Yellow Delrin.........

Neil,

They are, but if you want to see some real impressive imports for the money check out the new Colt Signature Series line. I just recently got these two.......

.......and they are superior to any other imports I own. These things are fantastic for the money.

Where did you get the 2nd colt? Looks like a good one to start on traditional slipjoints.

jzmtl,

I got both from a dealer I frequent for my Rough Riders on Ebay. He has all the Colt slippies including the first edition of the Signature Series. Check them out here: http://stores.ebay.com/KY-Knives__Colt_W0QQ_sacatZkyknivesQQ_sidZ4401228QQ_trksidZp4634Q2ec0Q2em14?_pgn=1

They have added some new patterns to this run recently, many of them styled after some Queen patterns......some nice stuff. Smoky Mountain Knifeworks carries them too. It's actually their licensed brand now.

Freudian Frog,

All of them were in colored bone. The only problem I could identify was on one of two congress... es. On one of the smaller blades in its resting position they had sunk it too low, making the matchstrike pull harder to access (still not much of a problem). Other than that I really couldn't see anything wrong at all. :D

The fit was still superb, though some of them may not have made it to the final polishing stages.

jzmtl,

You are welcome bud!

Freudian Frog,

Hmmmm......haven't come across any of them yet. But I did buy some of the Synth Malachite ones that were what they called "seconds" but weren't marked as such. All of them have some small cracks in the handle material but they are faint cracks. Real hard to see. I thought the ones you had might of been these.

Spork,

Who......me?
