Looking for single AAA suggestions.
on: November 03, 2009, 12:07:35 AM
What I'd love is a Fenix E01 with a tail switch, but as I don't think that exists I'm open to suggestions.  Priorities are:

*tail switch
*single AAA cell
*10 or so lumens
*long as possible run times
*in the same price range as the E01, about £12 here.

I'm flexible about the brightness and run times but the rest are a must.  Not asking too much am I?

Well, until you mentioned the price, I was going to suggest the Leatherman Serac S1. I think you're looking at about double though.

I used to come here a lot.

Well, if you need a reference - I'd recommend it. A much better torch than the E01, and you get the choice of clip or keyring in the box.

I'm still awaiting a good deal on a Serac S2 at the moment. Too much money :(

Not a tailcap switch but worth a mention the ITP A3 EOS  :tu:

3 levels 1.5 lumens 18 lumens and 80 lumens run times are pretty good too  :salute:

As I was typing that, I remembered hearing that before, but if I put a brand new battery in each, the S1 seems to be a lot brighter....

Is there some subtle difference between the two?

That looks just about perfect, I can even get it in my price range in the UK. :tu:  I could wish for longer run times, but am I right in thinking that LM do their tests from an Alkaline cell rather than  Ni-MH?

That's weird.

My Fenix E01, which is about 10 lumens, runs on a single NiMH AAA for hours and hours and hours. I know that because I wanted to discharge a few AAA batteries and it took me days. The statemenent "11 hours in sun mode plus 10 hours in moon mode" is absolutely true.

Now, the Monarch is about 16 lumens... but gives you just 2 hours of runtime?!

I'm guessing they wrote '2' but they meant '20'. But I'm guessing here. :)

They have the same electronics and the same emitter.  I just compared the S1 to both of my E01s, and they appear to have the same output.  Maybe your S1 won the LED lottery?

I love the Monarch 300.  Runtimes a little low I can get about 4-5 hours.  You also get a quick release keyring or clip.  One is on my keychain right now, and it has done everything I could ask a little light to do.  The throw on these is actually pretty decent too.

It was the battery! I swapped them and all of a sudden the E01 was better than the S1 :D

Mystery solved :tu:

That's my EDC choice. Got my first one around May 08 and have used it daily at work since...actual use, clicking it on and off a minimum of 3-4 times a day. It has held up real well. - LINK

Akoray K103 fits most of those descriptions, but blows away the others in terms of lumens/brightness & throw. not sure about the runtimes, but this is a great light for the $

I just bought two K-103 for my friends. I'll see how well they work out.

The K-103 is my fave 1xAAA light. Nice beam, bright with good throw for its size. Its cheap but don't feels like some of the more expensive ones.

A.

No, 2 hours sounds about right for a single AAA alky.

SL Microstream 1AAA outputs 20 to 25 lumens with a 1.5 hr runtime.

This Monarch has a little less output, so other things being eqaul, should get a little better runtime than Microstream.

Very interesting thing about SL Microstream:  running an Energizer Ultimate Lithium AAA cell triples its runtime to nearly 5 hours!

Wouldn't surprise me if running a lithium AAA in this LM Monarch would provide a similar boost in runtime.

Well I got the Monarch through today and I have to say I'm impressed. :tu:  Even with the Alkaline cell this came with the light output is better looking than the advertised 16 Lumen would suggest.  I suspect this is due to the fact it has a pretty tight, bright spot and not much spill which is fine by me.  I'll post some more thoughts once I've had a good play with it. :)

PS Thanks to Ringzero for suggesting it. :tu:

Glad I could point out the right light for you, Gareth.

Hope the Monarch works out well for you.

Looks to be one of those 'bigger bang for you buck' lights.

Very similar to the Streamlight MicroStream, which is my favorite for EDC.
