I remember something along those lines, too; IIRC, the original new Soldier sheaths were made in China, but the quality was below Swiss-standards, and I think the Swiss people were pissed about it going elsewhere, too. Rather than face backlash, Victorinox made the right move in the end. Still can't remember if the other sheaths are still made in Switzerland, though.

That book is really not that great for information, but at least it came with an 05 signed old Soldier that Chako will love.

I believe the story goes that when the contract was to be renewed it was open to all to put in a proposal/bid. Of course this meant that at least some Chinese companies were trying to get the contract; it doesn't mean they were ever going to get it though.

Over the years I've spent a lot at Lee Valley . They have some neat stuff . I do a lot of xmas shopping there .

Trust me - you don't! I am lazy, so I usually buy Lee Valley stuff delivered to my home. When I got it, I jumepd into my car and personally took it back to the store (about 1/2 hour drive). The guy at the counter listened to what I had to say, nodded, pulled out a supertinker from his pocket and said, "yeah, it's not in the same league". This was the only time I returned something to them. I can't even find words to describe how terrible it is.

Thanks for the info, ufox. I actually wanted to get one of these. What exactly was wrong with it? I was actually at Lee Valley this past weekend and was thinking about this item. In the end, I just got a few items as Christmas presents for some people.

PyroJames: If you are at the store, ask them to bring it out for you, and check it out. I just would not know where to begin on the "what was wrong with it" subject. Let's try... blade-crap, body-palstic crap, can opener-crap, corkscrew-crap (take a look at how it is attached to the body).

lockpicker: I bought it from Lee Valley, I cannot either confirm or disprove their claim that this is a French Army Knife.

All that said, there are at least 2 good things about this knife: the fork and the spoon are OK!
