This thread started with French bashing, proceeded to slurs against American gun owners, then moved on to slurs against the South and Florida.

But, none of that was deemed political.

Recent threads have included over the top Swiss bashing, advocacy of Communism, and a doctored photo mocking Ex-President Bush.

But of course, none of that was deemed political.

Seems to depend on whose ox is being gored as to whether or not a thread will be deemed too political.

I agree that it would be better to keep politics completely out of threads, except in the Break Room.

But, if certain members want to engage in French bashing, Swiss bashing, slurs against gun owners, the South, etc. they shouldn't expect to do it with impunity.

Turnabout is fair play.

Frankly I don't think any amount of "bashing" or politics, including the Break Room is acceptable.   All it seems to do is upset people, and there is no chance of actually accomplishing anything, if in fact members managed to agree on anything in the first place.  Political discussions are like masturbation with no release.  Even if there was a promise of some kind of happy ending, it wouldn't amount to anything.

You can suggest that perhaps I am promoting my own political agenda by deciding when to close a thread, by choosing when my "team" is taking too many hits, or has the last word, but the reality is that I don't see any reason to allow it to languish here, and if I didn't firmly believe that folks have the right to communicate then things would be closed a lot sooner.  But, then I'd be labeled oppressive.

This is a tool forum.  Tools are used for constructive pursuits.  Let's keep the conversations constructive even if they have little or no tool content.  There are lots of political forums out there that members can go to if they want to talk about the politics of any region.  Nothing will be accomplished there either, but at least I won't have to clean up the mess.
