kid friendly keyring tool
on: December 07, 2009, 03:58:28 AM
ok so my son is taking after me and wants his own edc bag (for his flashlights and cars) and now he wants a multi tool.  im thinking of a keyring type tool.. something small and with no sharpes on it (edges or points)  i know gg found something on ebay once but dont recall what it was called.  and i figured i'd see what everyone else has to say.

What about protected blades, like on the Raker Ring Tool or ResQMe?  Failing that, you could try a Squirt with the blade snapped off, or a SOG CrossGrip with the pointy bits removed?

Instead of snapping the blade why not dull it with a file.

Dull knives are far more dangerous, as he will try to cut something and end up doing more damage to himself.  better to not have a blade at all than a dull one.

unsub... nope thats not it.  i remember what gg found was titanium.. thanks everyone else.  def he's 4.5.  a protected blade would not be bad when he's older but i'll cross that road when he's there.  i was thinking of maybe (dear lord i think you all have gotten to me) of getting some olders SAK's and moding one for him.  not too many layers just ones that he can 'use to help dad'  i'm so proud of my boy!

I know Neil got his boy a PPP and removed the blade, although I'm pretty sure his lad is a bit older.

I think this is what you'r referring to?

Also, I would suggest a Swiss Tech micropliers. There's even a review of 'em on the main page. Very simple. No blades. Tiny pliers and the handles are screw drivers.

Just as an FYI, the 6-feature MicroTech Pliers can be found at most Walmarts. :)

I second this recommendation, no sharp points on it and a surprisingly tough set of pliers and screwdrivers.  I carry an older model of this.
