Looking for carbon whittlers.
on: December 13, 2009, 07:35:55 PM
Thats right. I'm looking for carbon whittlers! Good ol' 1095 rust attracting whittlers. Know where I can find some?

I recently bought a beautiful German-Eye Bone Whittler. I *thought* I was buying carbon steel. It was listed as high carbon on ebay  and a great deal of searching on the nets seemed like it was carbon too (Many websites selling the same exact model listed it as being carbon steel). Only after having the knife for a while was I able to track down just what steel was in the thing. Something called German 4034 High Carbon rustless steel. I believe its similiar to 420HC.

Anyway, it is still a beautiful knife (I got it at a pretty decent price) and I will use it alot, but finding real carbon steel is very hard it seems. I really like the patina and I have better luck sharpening it.

Incidentally, it appears that the Jim Bowie whittlers made by Carl Schlieper might be real carbon steel....but then again, I thought the one I bought was as well.

(And don't bother mentioning Case. I like Case CV and all, but as far as I can tell they haven't actually produced a CV whittler since the 70's and that makes it both very expensive and hard to find.)

Preferably something that won't break the bank either. I'd like to only spend around 50...but if it has to be more, I guess it has to be more...

I would still think ebay would be your best choice?  I've seen quite a few of the old Schrade knives on
there from time to time, but again it depends what your looking for.

Precise,

Look at Great Eastern Cutlery. They offer two whittler patterns under the Tidioute and Northfield brands that come in 1095 Carbon. And also look at Queen Cutlery, they offer whittlers in their Amber Carved Stag Bone and Birds Eye Maple in D2 Tool Steel (I know, D2 isn't quite a true carbon steel, but it's close!).

Also look at MooreMaker which has two Whittler patterns built for them by Queen Cutlery, a Spineback Whittler and a Sowbelly Whittler.....both in 1095. Also look for the Bulldog USA Whittler, Queen built one for them in this run with 1095 blades and Stag scales.

If you like German made stuff both Boker and Hen & Rooster make whittler patterns in Carbon Steel, give them a look as well.

Hey, what's wrong with slip-joints? :P  While GEC has come up the fifth time in conversation, whether on here or in person, I'll stick to oogling the Case and Buck slip-joints.  :D

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll save up for a Queen. I like boker but trying to figure out what is ss or carbon isnt worth my time. I notice queen says in nice bright letters 1095 carbon steel. I like that.

As said above Hen and Rooster makes very nice carbon steel knives  The number stamped on the blade plus a C is for the carbon steel ones :tu: I have a Whittler made by them and the number on the blade is 353C-NGB/M it's the Little Mustang so instead of a Hen and a Rooster it has a Mustang emblem  I like looking on Ebay for the ones with bits of rust that a lot of ppl run from as well ::) :D Deals can be had like that as most ppl like SS cause of the no rust thing ::) :D
