Whats up?
on: December 14, 2009, 05:00:43 AM
So, anyway ive been trolling around on your forums for a while now...reading reviews and what not and ive gotta admit the community here seems wonderful. Anyway i'll get down to the business, i edc a gerber mp-600, the black oxide version and its an amazing tool, it does everything i need or want, but today i won an ebay auction on a brand new but out of the box black oxide gerber freehand for $34!!! I couldnt pass a deal like that up so now ill be patiently waiting for my new toy to see what its all about.  :D  has anyone had any experience with the freehand? From what I've heard its a tank.

Anyway i'm Andy, I play bass in a metal band, and im a gerber guy.
Hows everybody doing?

Welcome to the Multitool.org forum!

The Freehand is indeed a massive hunk of metal.  Gerber's designers told me that they set out to make the biggest multitool, and they succeeded.  That thing is a monster!

I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it when it arrives!

...... has anyone had any experience with the freehand? From what I've heard its a tank.

I'd say that's a fairly accurate description :tu:

I'm interested to see how you like it, being a seasoned MP-600 user. There's similarities between the two, but they are quite different in some key ways.

Oh, and welcome

Well theres not alot I cant do with my mp-600, barring opening the tools from the outside of the tool and cutting stuff with scissors (my model doesn't have any). I hope it can earn its place on my belt so i can give my 600 a rest, but its gonna have to prove that its more versatile, I have no reservations about grabbing my 600 for almost any task at hand whether its the right tool for the job or not and 95% of the time theres nothing I cant do with it. I'm hoping the freehand proves to be just as if not more usefull, either way for the price I had to have it, and I cant wait to carry it and see what it can do.

Andy

I think it will please you in some ways, but maybe not in some others  :-\

My gripe with the Freehand is the screwdrivers - I much prefer the MP-600 personally, especially the Phillips.

But, if I've learned anything since joining this forum, it's that what I prefer doesn't matter to others :D

It's a great tool regardless :tu:

Well its got a tool kit on its way with it, and I've got a couple 3 1/2'' shank driver bits (phillips/slotted) I'm gonna throw in there with it just for better reach and convenience, I love the 3d phillips driver on my 600 it could be a little longer but its a damn fine driver. I wish that gerber would have left the fat stubby driver alone and just dropped one of the slotted heads for more space but whatever if I've got alot of screwing to do ill just grab a screwdriver to sit alongside my MT.

That's my point exactly Andy!

I'm not a fan of Gerber's "flat" Phillips driver at all. The MP-600 Phillips is up there with Leatherman and Bear IMO, i.e. one of the best.
I used to come here a lot.
