Spyderco Help
on: December 14, 2009, 08:18:12 AM
Guys, I need some help spending money! Well, at least deciding which to spend money on.

I am looking into buying a new EDC blade, and hopefully it will be a Spyderco.
Currently I am looking at the Tenacious, the UKPK (cause it looks nice and I don't really need locks for the most part, although the price is brutal for it) and possibly the Caly 3.

So if anyone can give me any input it would be much appreciated :tu:

Well the Caly 3 and UKPK are basically the same knife, except the Caly 3 locks.  The Tenacious is kinda in its own world with how cheap they can be had.  In my opinion the UKPK is the perfect edc size.  You can't go wrong with any of them, but it were my money and I wanted an EDC that would last, I would choose the UKPK.

Like I just posted in another thread, why would you chose a UKPK over a Caly3 if the legality of a lock isn't a problem?  Many people do seem to make that very decision, but all I know is that given the choice I'd chose the locker every single time.

The lock is an important safety device- if it wasn't, you wouldn't see it on so many knives, and you wouldn't see manufacturers spending so much money trying to develop newer, safer and more convenient locking mechanisms.  I usually opt for a lock over a non locking model, which is why OHT variants and the Wenger S557 see more pocket time than most of my other SAKs.

That having been said, I'd love to get a UKPK just for the fun of it, but if I was looking for something to carry and use, I'd lean towards a locking blade.

And, having seen all of these in person, but not actually owning any of them, I would probably go with the Tenacious, as the others aren't going to perform any better to justify the higher cost.  The tenacious is just an impressive piece for the money.

If I found a Caly 3 for trade and I had something to part with, I woudl snatch it up in a hearbeat, but the right deal hasn't come through yet.

Well how much do you want to spend? I don't think caly3 and tenacious are in the same league, consider one cost 3x the other.

Get a Sage 1 and don't look back. Awsome knife. You won't be disapointed. Even with the extra money.

I am really really liking the UKPK. The more I look at it the more I like it. I have a work folder already, something that gets beat up and abused. But I really want a super nice knife, for once, with good steel, good materials, and a cool design. That's what the UKPK is to me. I understand the argument for locks on folders, but the Brits all seem to be fine without, and so does Zack. The orange handles are great in my opinion, the blade shape is the nicest I have seen, S30V steel is awesome, the size is perfect for me as an EDC, and the pocket clip is also perfect. I can put it for left-handed carry tip up.

Hopefully I will grab one in the new year, unless I find something better :D

That's because they aren't allowed to have it.  :P

Since we don't have the restriction, why not?

I know they have the restriction and we don't, but it's the cool factor 8)

I could get a Caly3, which is the same knife with a lockback design, and VG-10 steel, but it does cost more on the Warriors and Wonders site I have been looking at... and no orange G10.

So much to think about when you are poor and can't afford 2! :ahhh :P

Exactly.  We only "cope" because we have no choice.  If I had the choice I'd personally get the Caly3, no question.

Be careful moving the pocket clip.  You have to remove the barrel screw that hold the backspring in place, and its a PITA to get back in.  As I said in earlier posts, if the caly 3 would have been for trade, I would have snatched it and not looked back, but the UKPK has been very good to me (except for putting a hole in my thigh).  I'm carrying it right now as a matter of fact.  Think of it as the most agressive sak you will ever see.

Hey Shane
Honestly I totally get why you want the UKPK because I want one too. But consider this: you aren't going to be a student forever but you need a good solid knife now that you'll use in your job recreation and for school stuff given what your major is. Given all that if I were you I'd get the caly 3 because of the locking blade. Is it absolutely necessary to have a lock? Maybe not but why not for now? Do you use a locking or fixed blade now? Save up for the UKPK IMO, go for the caly 3 now. :)

(Image removed from quote.)

I'd choose Persistence over Tenacious for EDC:

-An ounce or so lighter.

-A little bit cheaper.

-Persistence sub-three-inch blade is legal to EDC almost anywhere is the USA (except for a few Democrat strongholds such as Chicago and Boston, but luckily those are rare.)

I have to agree that given the choice, I'd go for a locker too Shane.

The UKPK is my dream UK Legal EDC knife, and it's a fine knife and for a slippy, the blade is pretty secure.

But I'd carry my mini-grip at least as much if I could.
I used to come here a lot.

Yeah... My field is pretty intense on stuff like that. Well, who can tell me the differences in the Caly3 and UKPK? Are the ones I listed all there are?
Steel, lock and colours available?

Steel is different, where its made its different, lock back design, but other than that is basically the same knife.  The Caly 3 had a few colors.  Black, Foliage Green, and I want to say carbon fiber.  I say get a black one. The whole point of the design is for it to blend in and not scream knife.  The orange is cool, but its also more of a fad color.  Black will always be popular.

I own a Tenacious and a UKPK. I like both of them, the Tenacious is the better bang for the buck.
