might try my first mod.
on: December 17, 2009, 02:02:05 PM
Background:
I sent my Charge XTi in for servicing and since I did'nt want to be without a MT, I went out and picked up a Skeletool CX with PE from a shop down from the Base. One of the drawbacks one this tool is that you can't use the bit driver when the tool is in the "close" position so this morning I thought of a "addition" that would eliminate the problem insted of milling off the 'biner clip.
You'll need one of those .250" adaptor for drills to use hex bits. Grind a profile to fit in the bit holder of the Skeletool. If you ground evenly, the ground down shank with be held securely and will pass through the hollowed out handle on the tool perfectly center. Now you can use and manner of .250 hex bit of any profile you want. The adaptor can be removed and stored in the side pouch of the holster.
I addition to the above, you could leave the adaptor a little longer. Leave enough shank so you can snap a .250" mini rachet on there for a little added torque.
I'm hoping to start R&D tonite, with first attempt starting tommorow. I'll post updates, pics and demensions as I go.

That sounds like a good idea, I'm looking forward to seeing how well it works. :tu:

Show and tell time!

Pic 1-The victim-Skeletool CX

Pic 2-The completed adapter-I used an extension from a old Chapman mini ratchet set I had.Any suitable sized extension will work, including the Leatherman bit adapter(would involve a lot less filing as well)
Basically I cut the part for length, filed the profile of a tool bit on one end, lightly polished the shank to provide clearence when the MT is closed and finished it off with the lock notch and a quick cold blue.

Pic 3-You can now use standard .250 hex bits

Pic 4-Is also compatible with the Leatherman driver tool bits.

Pic 5-Finished product-I left a little extra length so I could use the adapter with a .250 mini ratchet. The addition of the mini ratchet adds torque as well as ease of use.
All the parts fit in the supplied sheath, and with the addition of a mini ratchet or a small .250" wrench you not only have added these tools to your inventory but also increased the amount of torque at your disposal.
If you have big hands, you can also use it with the tool open for a more comfortable grip when using the pliers.
The downside to this that I can see:You'll have to be careful how much torque you apply so you don't break the bit driver.

good work.
now you could leave home the skeletool, and just use the ratchet alone :D

I've just ordered the bit extender but then I realised it wouldn't fit a ratchet around it

I have a small ratchet somewhere so I will do some fiddling when I find it. I like your set up, it's looks good  :tu:

You mean LM's bit extender? I think it should fit the small ratchet by Vic...
