Leatherman and COO for 2010
on: December 18, 2009, 06:19:43 AM
I know some people are saying not again but with a it almost being a new decade and Leatherman not disclosing where there tools are made since what 2003? I figured I would bring it back up.

So far I know the box leather sheaths are made in Mexico.

Also how does Leatherman(and Corona...) sell multitools in the USA with out COO labels?

Also please don't post old info I know how to use search.

Are you asking where the tools are made and why the company doesn't use COO labels? Or just the latter?

To answer the former, I think the few members we have who've gone on the Leatherman factory tour would vouch for the tools being made in Oregon. Apparently the company will disclose certain information (plier heads cast in Mexico) but they don't readily advertise it. FWIW, as I understand the info I've seen it was determined by US Federal courts that the tools were considered made in the USA in a ruling that occurred in 2006.

IIRC from class, there are rules for what does and does not need a country of origin label, most of which are related to food/agricultural items. I'll check my notes but do not think there is any requirement for products produced in the USA to have a label stating such. Wikipedia backs this up but they list no source for that specific information (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Made_in_USA). I suspect that since they are not required to state anything they just don't in order to avoid possible litigation. It's entirely possible that in some states the tools would not be considered USA made and another lawsuit similar to the California one could be filed by litigants in whatever state over what would be considered "false labeling."

What do Leatherman tools sold in other countries say on the label? All mine have a little sticker that says "Intended for sale in the USA" on the boxes.

What did the old info say?

What does it matter, if I may ask? If a tool is good, it is good and if it sucks it sucks, where ever it may came from I guess.

On a parallel note, the Victorinox AutoTool had a sheath that was made in Mexico, and a majority of internal components that were made in China.

The point is, who cares? :)
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

ALP I am not having a bite at you here so please don't take this as such, but are you now saying that's it's fine for Vic to do this, because they are Vic, and with Leatherman and just about everyone else you have "issues" with it's not OK?

Errr no.

If you don't want your posts examined and other people's opinions - don't make them in the first place.

Incidentally, I think every reply on this thread (and many others you have started about your obsession) is basically saying the same thing as I do, so don't single me out please - it seems to be most people.

So where do you stand on it all then?

With the exception of the minathor(which uses premium Swiss made watchmakers tools made by bergeon) I like my multitools to have all/most parts made by the same company and in a western country. And before someone says it can't be done remember Bear & Son does it and they are a smaller company.

Now please back to topic. Maybe I'll do a Vic thread someday.

Gentlemen, let's try to keep this pleasant.

For the record, I am not pointing fingers or looking at anyone, this is a gentle reminder that this is a tool forum, not the Slappy Fight Hall of Fame, and there is a legitimate question in here somewhere regarding the importation of goods and the declaration thereof.  It seems that there are some personal issues arising that are likely better discussed in private, or with a member of the Mod/Admin staff.

Def - how many times is it reasonable for one person to find different ways to try to legitimise the same basic, xenophobic point of view, and disguise it as a question? Particularly when that point of view is drawing more and more people all the time to react to it, and is seemingly pissing people off? Those people can be regular posters or even moderators too it seems!

It's obvious that ALP realises the effect of his posts, and he continues to do it, presumably to get a reaction. Isn't that the definition of trolling? I don't think it's become unpleasant though to be fair. Most of us just view it as sport (check out page 6 of the Douk-Douk thread, or many, many others)!

Ultimately, you're the boss, but IMO this is doing harm to your forum. Sorry for being blunt, but that's my view and you wouldn't expect anything less from me I'm sure.

I'll leave it alone now.

I'm pretty certain that what ALP is saying is what is posted in the above quote.  He is interested in knowing where Leatherman sources parts from.  Why he is interested is not really a concern.  While I may not agree with his personal views, no one is asking me to.  Imagine that someone else asked this question, and we'd probably all work hard to find an answer, and in fact, this information may indeed provide some insight into the brand and the individual tool variants, in the same way as knowing which PST's were made in Japan and which were made in the US.

Let's face it, between the Japanese PST's and the lawsuit regarding component origin, where something is made is a bigger part of Leatherman's history than any other brand.

Oh I know, but you don't seriously believe that this particular question about COO is motivated by different "interests" than the 4,328 other times he's asked, surely? :D

OK - I really will leave it now. Sorry. I'll not come back to this thread, promise.

What I think is immaterial, as is what you believe is his reasoning behind asking.  There is the potential for information that could be of interest to collectors here, and I'd hate to see that thrown away over personal issues.
