Well it has finally happened:

The Core is now on the list of retired tools...

Goodbye old friend  :salute:

Yeah, I commented on it earlier in another thread.  With the ST300 out, though, it's beyond a suitable replacement.  Someone explain to me, though, how just one or two slight changes between the Core and the ST300 affords the latter with nearly 35g less weight?

They were extremely niche multitools, I can see why sales on them decreased with the economy, I'm afraid. :/

Teehee. I just think it's funny that the people who only collect retired tools now have to run out and buy four more :D

I'm stocked up with Cores for a while anyway :tu:

I used to come here a lot.

I'm looking forward to next year, when Cabelas buys up all the leftover Cores, paints LEGACY on the side in gold paint, then sells them for $150 each. :D

That is a mighty bummer I have been debating the merits of the Hybrid Vs the Genus & not had a clear answer  :ahhh :ahhh.
I do like the topline look of the Genus but not the price  :-\ :-\

Dave not so bad for me I have a BO & SS Core already  :D :D.

I have the Hybrid, but haven't found a Vista or a Genus that I can afford so far.

The Genus looks like the one to get though. That's the daddy.

The Core was a great simple yet tough heavy duty tool. No thrills or gimmicks. Kind of sad to see it go.

The best way is to give every member of MT.O at least two Cores

For the win on that comment.

The ST300 has the same tools as the core, minus the plastic. Seems like a winner to me.

In commemoration here's a link to a Leatherman patent application that shows the Core with the Surge saw/file exchanger (among other extremely interesting things).

Link.

Cool link! I love browsing the multitool patents. :)

I'm glad they never went with the handle cutouts/rubber inserts. That whole "look" has come to be associated with lesser quality tools in my mind. :-\

I wonder why they didn't make the Core that way.

Speaking of retirements, JoeBW pointed out to me that the five big Leatherman hunting knives are now listed in the retired section too:

http://www.leatherman.com/products/family.asp?f=14&c=2

And surprisingly, the Serac line of flashlights is no longer listed on the lights page:
