Putting a SOG blade on a broken Gerber
on: June 06, 2007, 08:59:49 AM
I got this Gerber at a pawn shop for $5. At one point it it was a camo Gerber with black pliers.  The camo as since almost all come off and the knife blade was snapped off. At first I bought it because it was cheap and all the other tools were in perfect shape.  But after reading one of damotas threads about how to take Gerbers apart I thought that just maybe I could Mod one of the extra SOG blades I had laying around. It took some slow grinding to get the shape of the bottom of the blade correct so that it would lock right but everything fits and works good. What do you guys think?

Sweet bit of work there Prime! Nice job of "Making the Unworkable Work" !

So the pivot hole in the blade is the same diameter on both SOG's and Gerber's eh? I didn't know that. And I believe Leatherman uses the same diameter as well. Must be some sort of industry standard?

It's probably not so much a matter of industry standards so much as available pinsktock or bolts.  There has to be a "sweet spot" between strength and size restrictions and I imagine most, if not all companies have found it on their own.

Except for those darn Swiss. Their pivot pins are 4mm diameter. Weird.

When are the rest of you people going to switch over to the inch system?

Never- things sound bigger when you measure them in millimeters!  :pok:

As for the Swiss, well they are in a separate category entirely when it comes to engineering things.  As Kelly Bundy used to say, the mind wobbles!
