Ontario SPAX- Tool or not tool?
on: June 07, 2007, 09:12:51 PM
I have been looking at the Ontario SPAX for some time now, ever since it's first generation, but I've never gotten one.

I saw the latest version reviewed in the latest issue of Tactical Knives and it's kind of piqued my interest again, but I wonder how well it fits in with our definition of a multi tool?  Not that we ever really came up with a concrete definition, but what does everyone else think?

I think I might have to get one and test it out next to CRKT's MAK-1 when it arrives.  Let the best big ass tool win!

What the heck does that big hole in the center do? Open fire hydrants?
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

I love big blades (i,m a huge kukri fan!) but that just looks pointless ???

would you really want to tighten/loosen nuts and bolts with a sharp spanner? if you slipped off what you were working on (easily done) you could either injury yourself or others with it! :o

sorry to put a downer on it, (not in my nature honest ;D) but for the weight of it you could probably carry a kukri/bowie and a decent adjustable spanner/wrench ::)

The cutout has supposedly been developed for fire hydrants, oxygen bottles and numerous other activities.

As for carrying a Kukri, you are probably right, but while it might be acceptable to have a crash/rescue axe in your trunk, the police may ask about a giant bowie in the passenger seat or backpack.

well the best kukri i,ve ever used is the cold steel gurka kukri in carbon v.

holds its edge forever, and if you use draw cuts, its very nearly as powerful as a medium forest axe, but in my opinion more accurate and versatile :)

I had the CS Gurka Kukri for a while- I liked it but it was a little large for most things.  It was a darned good knife though.  I think if and when I get another one it will be either the Gurka Lite or a Himalayan Imports model.

Prices are very good when your essentially getting a custom knife, certainly you might get a himalayen import cheaper, but over in the uk the tora kukris are regarded as the best.

heres a link to some reviews...

There's a good bit of reading there, and I don't have much time....  still, post them when you get a chance and I'll read them when I can!
