Bear Tools question
on: January 15, 2010, 03:21:58 AM
Heya MT.Oers!

I recently acquired a sweet Crescent ToolZall Maintenance Pro (phew!) from eBay.  Love the clipper head on this thing!  :D

Don't love the file!

I know I can (if I can get the part) replace it with a part from a Bear Gardener (I like the weeding tool.)  Just wondering...will tools from other size Bears fit in this and lock against the back spring?

With some creative shortening of the plastic spacers, there's more than enough room to fit two short tools and four long tools in here, with enough space to stick in an improv lanyard ring if I wanted to.  Right now there's three long tools and one short tool (saw, half-serrated knife, file, large flathead.)  Ideally I'd set it up with knife, saw, weeder, sheepsfoot (from the normal Bear Jaws), awl (from the Super), and I guess replace the flathead with a can opener (to cut cans.)  Make a CutZall ;)

Thanks for any responses :)

Can't tell you anything about the Bears (sorry) but I will say welcome to the forum.

I'm sure someone will be able to answer your question though. :)

Hi Salackone

Is the Crescent ToolZall Maintenance Pro the same size as the Bear 155 (i.e. 4" in the closed position, or 4.5")? I only have the 155 to compare I'm afraid.

If, as I suspect, it is only 4", then the gardening tool is going to be slightly too long I think. Not by much, but the curvature of the handles isn't going to allow it to fix.

Actually, there could be other problems.

Actually, gimme a few minutes and I'll try it :D

OK - this is what we now know!

The tool locks up just fine:

But, as I feared, it won't close:

So, I don't think it would be straight forward! I hope that helps.

The Maintenance Pro is one of the shears-based tools...basically it's a Gardener, but with Bear's rather bad file instead of the weeder.  So the weeder is no problem, as it's the same size handles as a Super, I guess.

So the regular 4" Bear tools work OK with non-locking 4.5" handles?  I wasn't sure the tools from a locking Super or Bear Jaws would fit in the handles from a non-locking Gardener.  If the 4" tools work OK with a Gardener, I'll just keep my eye out for a regular Bear Jaws at the pawn shops and flea markets, and use it as a donor for a Mixmaster.

Thanks for taking the time to check this out!

I think I follow.

In terms of the locking, the 4" & 4.5", locking or non-locking are all interchangeable! The only potential problem you could hit is as in my experiment, i.e. trying to fit a 4.5" specific tool into a 4" frame (although I don't have many examples of those apart from the weeder, most of the components seem to be the same).

I think you're covered :tu:

Good luck, and it'd be great if you could stop by and show us the results of whatever you do.

Thanks for the help!  If all the tools will fit in a 4.5", I think I'm set :)

And thanks for the welcomes!  I'm not up to my armpits in multis yet...but I could see it happening... :)

My wife would think it's a bad thing :)

Besides the ToolZall, I've got a Wave, a BuckLite 355 Tool, a couple of Micras, a cheap-o mini plier with an LED, an Artifact, a Vic Super Tinker, a Wenger SwissBuck Taskmate, and a chinese Handyboy plier/adjustable wrench clone.  Except for really wanting a Crunch  >:D I'm pretty good to go...

Like that's ever stopped me with anything else :P
