Im no torch expert, but i got this gerber tempo recently and works great, the other night will sorting out my padlock problem in the snow it was very useful . plus cheap and 1AA and just turn the base for on and off so a no brainer, paul

If you are looking to go the cheap route, the AKOray K-106 is great light. Super bright, programmable with three modes. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16607 You could get 2 for $40.
I've never had one but I was looking at the Fenix L1T. A nice simple flashlight with a straightforward high/low setting, it might just suit you nicely. It might not be as all singing and dancing as the LD10, but to my mind that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Never saw the point of buying expensive flashlights that will have the same LEDs and the same batteries in them.
