Recommend a AA led clicky flashlight
on: January 10, 2010, 09:57:30 PM
Been looking for a replacement for my HD SF e2d and 6p led (the 6p has been retired from edc role due to its self activation and drainage of batteries in my bag, my lights need to be easily accessible and activated), the e2d has the old incandescent bulb and run time is only around an hour. A switch from cr123 to AA is the point, as the price of cr123s is hight, and they are not as easily found as AA variety.

The requirements are: single AA (smaller size, edc), clicky (no preference, reverse clicky will do), a pocket clip (must have for edc), price point of +/- $50, lumen output and modes are not critical as I'm very old school when it comes to my lights and one high setting will do, but a low power long run time feature is a bonus, high quality and durability is a must.

So far the contenders are:  Fenix LD10, Quark AA R5, NiteCore D10 (pocket clip sold separately), still looking for other options.

Any recommendations other that what I found so far, and any input and feedback for the lights listed is greatly appreciated, thank you :tu:

My current line up:
LM S2 (like it, but it's lacking a permanent lanyard hole and/or a better pocket clip),
Gerber Infinity (very nice light, can be used like a clicky due to its design),
SF G2 led (comments in the first post),
SF e2d defender (incandescent, close to 2 years of edc  :tu:),
Vic Inova AA (nice light, got 3 of them, one is lost somewhere in the house),
Vic Inova AAA (nice light, but the battery leaked inside rendering it useless  :().

A pair of CR123, AA, and AAA for size comparison

Thx and

Thx, Gerber makes some decent lights, tough and durable in my experience, but the light I'm after needs to have a click type activation button on its tail cap for fast one handed deployment

Well I love the Infinity as it's a truly great task light in my experience, as you can easily do close up work without blinding yourself :)

The clip's not that good though, and the throw's not great either.

The LD10 is a superb light though, and well worth the money :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

I'd have no problem recommending the Eagletac P10A as I've had absolutely no issues with this light.

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,12341.0.html

At 4 5/16" this isn't what you would call small though. :-\  Since writing the review I have started using the pocket clip and have had no issues at all, if carried lens down there is only 3/4" sitting out of your pocket, but if carried lens up then you get 2" of the light sitting out.  Have a look at this pic from Eagletac's own site, it'll help show how the clip is set up:

The 'low' setting of 37 lumen give plenty of light for day-to-day stuff, much more than the numbers might suggest, and I've had no issues with the run time although I've never put the claimed 8 hours to the test.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

I had an LD10 I thought was a great light, but I aso have a Romisen MXDL RC-G2 Cree light.

They are simple clickies with no fancy settings, but are a serious bargain too:

If you are looking to go the cheap route, the AKOray K-106 is great light. Super bright, programmable with three modes. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16607 You could get 2 for $40.

I've never had one but I was looking at the Fenix L1T.  A nice simple flashlight with a straightforward high/low setting, it might just suit you nicely.  It might not be as all singing and dancing as the LD10, but to my mind that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I like it  :tu:, it's simple and it works with less things to go wrong, but it's missing a clip. Thanks Gareth (and the gang), still doing research

Yeah without a clip if I'm doing pocket carry it'll be a case of "is that a flashlight in your pocket or are you just happy to see me" heh

I have the Leatherman LGX 200 which is essentially a Fenix L1T.   The clip from River Rock (Target store brand), Energizer, and other Chinese flashlights fits it well, as shown in the photo below.

If you have to choose between Quark and Fenix, I recommend Quark.  I prefer the "tactical" UI over the regular, so that SOS, strobe, etc. don't get in the way of normal operation.  The clip is stout and can be reversed easily.

I have one that I use many separate bodies on (123, AA, AA^2, 18650).  I keep it in my laptop bag and use it frequently.  It's a great light.

...I still carry a D10 with the original (ramping) UI more than anything else though.

I agree, DX have a lot of good flashlights.  Never saw the point of buying expensive flashlights that will have the same LEDs and the same batteries in them.

Erm, not quite.  A bit too big a generalisation I feel.

I've had a Nitecore DI for a while which is great. Not sure if it comes within the price bracket though.

UPDATE :D

Got the Fenix LD10 in the end and I will admit it's a very nice light. The UI is simple and user friendly, like to modes, brightness, beam shots,etc... size and weight make it a perfect edc light. I got it a little over a month ago and just didn't follow up with the update until now. Thank You for all of your help and recommendations :tu:

btw is it me or the finish on Fenix lights tends to chip away instead of rubbing off with time?
