Ticknall Walk
on: January 10, 2010, 11:39:03 PM
Following on from last week's Anchor Church walk as covered here, I picked another walk from the same council website today. This time accompanied by 'er indoors, it was a little longer than the last one, and the weather was a lot colder!

Sadly, there were no particularly remarkable sights this time around, as the walk took us through fields and woods for a few hours. It was still enjoyable and thanks to the weather, the countryside was picturesque, if not especially spectacular. The sky was pretty grey, so some of the pictures look a little gloomy.......

Some of them are just about worth looking at anyway! :D

I used to come here a lot.

Very midlands!

Nice though... and no-one around to disturb your walk either  :tu:

Very nice pics, DaveK.

Time spent walking across fields and through woods in winter is usually time well spent IMO and light snow is a bonus.

Late fall through early spring is my favorite time for rambling.  No stiffling heat.  No bugs or poison ivy to worry about.  Lack of deciduous foliage improves the view.  Lack of undergrowth eases passage.  A great time to be out and about.

Cheers guys :)

@RZ - I agree, this is the right time of year for these otherwise "boring" walks I think. In a few month's these footpaths will be busier than the city centres - my cue to get up to the Peaks again I think :D

LOL!  Can't believe I forgot to mention "lack of people" as one of the HUGE advantages of winter hiking and camping.  A touch of frost will thin out the herd right quick.

Exactly.

The reason these walks are published on the council website is some vain hope that it will lower the NHS bill to promote health and fitness activities, so I guess they have to keep them "accessible" and easy for the great unwashed :D

Great pics, and beautiful countryside, but I especially like the fourth one from the bottom.  The one with the tortured looking tree amidst the placid ones.

Very nice.

LOL!  Nothing will ever lower the NHS bill - when a commodity is "free" demand will always rise.

Seriously, it's great that the council sets up these walks and publicizes them.  In doing so I'd guess they in effect give walkers a sort of quasi-official justification to cross private lands where necessary.

When I go on a local ramble a good part of my route is across private lands, and I'm often a tad uneasy about being confronted by irate owners.

It was built in 1831 according to this site http://www.derbyshireuk.net/ticknall_church.html - so not particularly old.

Well, I was going to say that it looks a lot like the church's in my area which was settled in the late 1800's.

Apparently the bit in the foreground was the old church, but they couldn't blow it up, so it's still there today. Been there since 1271 apparently - so that's pretty old!

Nice pics Dave. I love the spooky tree shot. Nicely framed.

Ringzero, one of the nice things about this country is that we have an enormous network of public footpaths and bridleways. Publicised walks like these follow public footpaths. You do occasionally get land owners deciding that they'd rather not let the public use it and then they do antisocial things like putting their angriest bull in the field that the path runs through. In that case, I feel perfectly justified in taking the next field along  :D

We also still have quite a large amount of common land. This is land where anyone can use it for grazing etc. Although the law gets tangled in this area and you often find local councils appropriating it.

Why did I hear the Black Adder theme when looking at the pics?
