on: January 15, 2010, 08:30:50 AM
Ok i was going to do a parachute jump in november this year for my 40th but due to my back injurie i cant do it, so my wife asked what would i like, well as ive decided this year to retire my old wave i would like a new LM , now i would like something with similar tools plus any extras  ;) and with a similar look, i dont wont the new wave as fancy something a little different, i like the charge xti or  Charge TTi , this will be a joint present from my family so think around £150 or poss a bit more, now im really looking forward to my 40th  :D thanks for any advice and yes i wont to stick to LM ,  :tu:

I'd go for the AL if it were me, I've never seen the point in cap crimpers in day-to-day life.

I'm not saying you should get one but try and get to look at Victorinoxs Swisstool and Spirit .

Well if it is for a special occasion, why not get something a bit special.

Here are some Leatherman suggestions in no particular order.

1. Get a sterling silver Charge if you want to spend a bit.
2. How about a 25th Anniversary Wave.
3. Or get a camo Surge from either Cabellas, or Bass Pro Shop from the States.
4. Maybe a Costco special Charge SLV. It comes in distinctive grey paint.
5. Get a Costco 25th Anniversary Charge AL.

Any of those will give you a tool that not many will have to mark a special occasion.

A little Leatherman information.

The guthook on the ALX is super handy.  The ALX is my favorite hard work MT.

(NB: I haven't handled an xti or tti however.

Thanks guys i was thinking of a swisstool but as had a LM for 12 years i like them, i like the idea of a 25th anniversary wave but this will get lots of use and dont wont something i would cringe at if i scratched it, Isnt Ti better than ali long term,

TTi.

Iam drawn to the TTi even just on looks, and im not a huge ali fan as a long term thing, steal and Ti seem to last longer and dont get brittle with age, i like tried and trusted materials,  :D

The reasons I prefer it over the AL (accepting that the cap crimper isn't really going to be that useful) are:

1) The Ti scales are far more resilient to scratching and denting than the aluminium. It's not going to impact the tool's usefulness, but it's better IMO.

2) The gut-hook on the serrated blade is one of the most used features for me. It is really, really good for opening taped parcels, cutting string etc, where you want to be careful of what's inside. Any blade will perform these tasks, but most of the time you don't know what's hidden and might get damaged by a blade if you cut a little too deeply....

3) You can get the gut-hook on the ALX, but I've personally never had the need for two bit drivers and prefer the scissors (and use them often).

4) It's titanium  8)

5) The ST300 is my "at home" tool, to be fetched when there's something big to be done. The Charge with it's pocket clip and smaller form factor is a lot more portable IMO. It's virtually unheard of for me to be more than a couple of feet from my TTi* - I panic when it's not there.

I agree with Chako, actually.  Since it's for a special birthday, why not get something kind of unique?  If you want a user, then I agree with the Cabela's or Bass Pro Shop Surge or the Costco SLV Charge.  I'm sure you'll love whatever you get, but it might be cool to get something a bit more special.  :)

You know what would make a great combo pressie would be a 20th Anniversary Wave, on account of you being such a big fan of your early Wave , it is a very cool version of the early Wave  :D. Plus a user like a Surge or late model Wave.
Cost & availability being the only hiccups too my cunning plan  ::) :D :D.
You might be able to snag a new/mint 20th Anniversary Wave for $60-$100us & a new Wave for around $55us, postage from the US would probably torpedo the budget though  :(.

Tough choice too make Paul, hope the poll helps  :D :D :D :D

I voted for the TTI. The Surge is great but I always end up going back to the TTI. The cap crimper (for me) is a nuisance about half the time and helpful the other half. The S30V and Gut hook are what set it apart.

It's just a great tool... Leatherman's best...And you're worth it

Just give yor family that list, and say:"Pick one" :multi:

yeah this is my thinking, imagine my horror when i unwrap another Kick, nothing wrong with them and love mine and used it alot at work today, but this has to be something special , my wave has sentimental value , i want this to have as much,  :tu: but be a replacement for my trusty old wave, also like the 25th anniversary wave but just to similar to my old one , the charge has classic looks but different if you know what i mean, plus this will be the only time ill have this kind of money to spend on another high end MT so its got to be right,  :tu: all i have to do now is wait till November  :(

Another vote for the TTi here - I'd get one in a flash except I already have a Ti and no current money to waste!

I think the addition of the guthook would be really useful, and currently carry one on my keys in the form of a SOG spare part. It would be so much tidier if it were on a TTi :D

I hope you really enjoy whatever you choose

I voted TTi, the one thing I wish my Charge SLV had is a gut hook, for opening packages like Dave said. Still it was cheap :).

I think its going to be the charger TTi  :D i read the review last night on the Charge TTI and it sounds spot on,i hope this tool does as well and last as long if not longer than my wave although there is still years of life in it, i also now after reading realize that the Ti and AL part is only the scales and nothing else, this was a big help, the review's rock on here,  :tu:
