Question on Quarks
on: January 26, 2010, 10:23:28 PM
Ok, so I find myself ogling the Quark series of lights, but I have a question:  although the Quark heads look the same between the CR123, 2x CR123, AA, and 2x AA, they list the heads on the accessory page as being separate, based on their voltages.  So with that said, are the heads not as mix-and-matchable between the bodies, unlike the Fenix series?  For example, can I take a head from one of their CR123 lights and put a 2x CR123 body on it, or would the voltage screw it up?  Likewise with taking a head from a 2x CR123 Quark and putting a AA body on it?  Would it also be a no go?

Thanks, guys (and girls), a flashaholic I am not, but if I were to dabble in Quarks, I'd like to know as to what I'm getting myself into. >.>

The only "different" head is the 123^2.  The 123, AA and AA^2 has the low voltage head (.9v - 4.2v), and they're all interchangeable.  The 123^2 has a high voltage head (3.0v - 8.4v) so that it can be used with two CR123 or two Li-Ion RCR123s (16340).

The low voltage head can be used with all bodies, but can only support one CR123 at 3.0v or one Li-Ion cell at 4.2v.  It will work with the following setups:

AA body (AA or 14500 Li-Ion)
AA^2 body (2*AA only)
18650 body
123^2 body (only when using a single 17670 Li-Ion rechargeable)

The high voltage head (123^2) will work with all bodies also, but only with the following setups:

AA body (14500 Li-Ion only)
AA^2 body (2* 14500 Li-Ion only)
18650 body
123^2 body (2*CR123, 2*16340 Li-Ion or 17670 Li-Ion)

*keep in mind that when I say AA, I mean Alkaline, NiMH or Lithium primary (Energizer L91)

To answer your question directly, NO! you can't use 2*CR123 with the 123/AA head.  I have two of the low voltage tactical heads with all of the body setups except 123^2, and they work great!

You're welcome.  In case you were wondering, the setup that will give you the longest runtime of all of the options is the 123^2 high voltage head paired with the 18650 body/cell.

I stick with the low voltage heads because that gives me more of the combinations I prefer.

How about the 123 head with a 123x2 body with a Li-on rechargeable 17670 3.7v battery? :D

Yeah, I mentioned that combo--check the list.

One I didn't mention is 123^2 head w/17670.  I'll add that now.
