Wenger Clava Review
on: November 09, 2013, 01:01:50 AM
Bought a Wenger Clava Lighter today and thought I share my thoughts on that baby.

From the Wenger website
Dimensions: 98 x 28 mm
Weight: 61 g
In plain English that means its smurfing big but surprisingly light (the Dual Pro in the picture weights a hefty 155g).

Description
The Clava has two screw caps with rubber seals, protecting the lighter (top, with lanyard attachment) and the refill/power adjustment (bottom). Both caps appear to be of similar size (the top one is slightly larger) but cannot switch position. The bottom cap is for some reasons heavier and appears to have some plastic disks glued in (I will try to remove them). As is, the bottom cap provides you with a waterproof compartment with a diameter of ~22 mm and a depth of 10mm. Somehow the bottom cap is slightly rounded and therefore the Clava can barly stand and even the slightest disturbance will make it fall over (I don't know why but I find this very annoying).

Production / Quality
According to the manual the Clava is produced in China. Fortunately, they did an outstanding job. All the parts are fitting nicely and both chrome and rubbery parts are smooth.

Flame
At any setting the Clava gives a nice steady flame, that can be hold for a prolonged time without discomfort / burning of your fingers. However, freshly filled and set to max, the Clava burns a long time even after turning it off.

What it is for
I believe this is an excellent lighter for your car- / emergency- / whatever-kit. It will be ready if you need it, even if you forgot about it for a decade AND its very safe to store (no accidental ignition, something I would worry with its brother the Asterion).

Whats it NOT for
It is not for daily use (can't imagine unscrewing the cap that much).

HOT
+ Bullet Proof
+ Well designed (no burnt fingers, even when running it for a long time)
+ Well crafted

NOT
- Large
- Tedious to use on a daily base
- Cannot stand upright
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

And the Goblet of Fire

Sorry, couldn't get a better picture of the flame.

Hah, my bad, the back lid was not filled up with plastic, but a metal weight disk. It also was not glued in but attached with a screw and very easily removed. The disks weight is ~5g (hey, thats almost 10% of its overall weight!!!) and it has a thinkness of 6mm.
I have no idea what its function is except of course without it the lighter can't stand at all  :P
