84mm Assortment.
on: January 26, 2010, 11:22:11 PM
Today after work, I visited a few sports and outdoorsy type shops in search for a watch. I didn't find what I was looking for in terms of watches but I was amazed that one store had 3 Victorinox knives on display. A Camper, a Tourist, and a Pocket Pal. I bought the Tourist and Pocket Pal. I can order other Victorinox items from them, so I thought that was rather neat! Tucking that bit of knowledge away for a rainy day

Well the end result was going to be a simple photo of the Tourist, however, I noticed that I had a few more 84mm similarly shaped SAKs on the tray. It would be great to take a group shot instead and ID them...that plus my collection has grown so quickly that I wasn't exactly 100% sure of what I had anyways.

So here goes...

1. Sportsman.
2. My First Victorinox Plus.
3. Recruit.
4. Tourist.
5. Waiter.
6. Salesman.

I'm a big fan of the 84mm size, they sit a lot smaller in your pocket with little or no difference in performance (IMO anyway).  That's a nice group you've got there Chako. :)

Thank you. I am very fond of the Recruit model. I EDCed it for a few months when I wasn't at work prior to getting the Knifeless Fuse.

Nice selection. I like the fact that you can get the 84s without backspring tools.  I like a smooth back :tu:

Quite right, the Cadet and Bantam currently, and the retired and rare Voyageur.

I don't see why not. :)  I wasn't listing it as it's in a different form to the ones in Chako's pic, but there's no doubt it's both 84mm and alox.  :tu:

I am very fond of the Recruit model.
The Recruit (actually the Eco version called the Driver) was my very first SAK in late 2008.

Nicely equipped and very pocketable.

I love the 84mm's- I have an 84mm Tinker I made from a Tourist and I love it. I think I'm going to turn a Sportsman into a Sportinker soon, I LOVE the 84mm file- it really makes the whole 84mm line for me.

EDIT: Oh yeah, the best 84mm SAK I had was for a few glorious days when I had a Sportsman with plus scales from Rotokid. I think Yud has one in his sig- I lost it in Chicago but that was the most perfect SAK on earth for me. Now that I have been swayed to team Phillips I would modify my idea of perfection to involve 84mm, plus scales, and a phillips

Is Rotokid still making Plus 84mm scales?

The last I heard of them he was putting them on Sportsmans (considering them to be by far the most likely recipient anyway) and then selling them on SOSAKonline under custom SAKs/mods- but alas the supply has run out I'm afraid :-\ I think it was all about the process he was using to create them, he was working on a more efficient way to do them. Before, I think his time investment was astronomical.

Ah. :/  Plus him being without power due to the storms last week or so (plus whatever other weather-related problems) probably doesn't help, either. :/

I like the 84mm. I want to make the Lumberjack Plus mod, which is 84mm, knife, combo tool, saw, backspring phillips. Can't seem to find a My 1st Vic Plus to make it work though.

If you can handle one extra layer, look for an Artisan/Craftsman/Fieldmaster Small. :)

Those are alright, it's not really the layers that concern me. I have no real need for scissors on a SAK, since I have the SURGE. And same goes for the awl. Also, I never really understood the dual blades on SAKs, it's just a tad over the top for me. Still looking to make the Lumberjack Plus, thanks though Saz :)

Actually, I misread your post; I thought you'd said you'd wanted scissors, too, hence why I suggested it. ^^;  Nevertheless, you have a PM inbound. :)

I'm suddenly quite charmed by the 84mm tools as well. I won an eco lumberjack on ebay, whilst drunk :drink:. When woke up the next morning I figured I would sell the thing on ???. Now that I have it, the tiny size and lightness make it totally neat, I don't think I can sell it.
Wish I could find some of those vintage 84mms though.

I have one the same as #3, it feels so great in the hand.  Definetly the Vintage 84mm with their extra weight and nicer scale composit feel like much higher quality knives.  Love them.
