and I thought I was the only one ... not!
on: January 30, 2010, 12:29:32 AM
Hello fellow multitool fans,

I was starting to think I was the only one with a fascination for multitools, specifically Leathermans.  I had been unable to find any websites about collecting and discussing these tools.  This apparent lack of info on the web was making me think that maybe I was a little strange when it came to multitools.

I finally stumbled on to mtblog.org, (a wonderful blog/site) where Dave K. in turn told me about this website.  Whew, what a relief.  Now I realize that not only am I NOT the only one, but in fact I am just a small timer at this (so far at least).

I bought myself a Leatherman Wave for Father's Day a couple years ago, giving full credit and thanks to my wife and daughter for such a thoughtful gift.  I now have about 20 Leatherman multitools, mostly retired models.  I am particularly interested in learning about and collecting all of the various PST models.  I had been frustrated in my efforts, mostly gleaning little tidbits from ebay auction descriptions.  I am very happy to have found an extensive forum here at multitool.org on this very specific subject!

Looking forward to hanging out, exploring and learning.

Greg,

Monterey, CA

Greg - 20 Leatherman tools isn't small time mate - I mean, how many can you really use at a time anyway?  ???

 :P

It's great to have you here - I'm sure you are going to love it, and become quite poor like the rest of us

Wow.

I'm shocked.

How could you get this forum so wrong?  We do NOT look favorably on multitool polygamy.   >:(

WE value the owner/tool relationship.  You need to search for my article on how to replace a broken blade on a LM Charge using old exhaust hangers.

Harems of multitools....  hedonistic decadence I tell you!  You should go off and start your own group:
www.Multitool swingers.org.

Well, I guess you should stay for a while, we may be able to save your multitool soul.  ::)

Oh, and could you please post pictures of your tools?  :D

With 20 Leatherman's you will fit right in. Watch out though. You may find that SAKs are addictive also if you don't watch out.

Thanks for the warm welcome ... "there's no place like home, there's no place like home".

Dave K: I suppose twenty Leathermans is a good start and yes it is certainly more than I can use at one time.  However, I am considering having something like a Batman utility belt custom-made so that I can carry a dozen or so Multitools all at one time - you just don't what needs may arise and I like to be prepared. The tool I carry is my first, the Wave.  However after seeing your video on the various Charge models I bought a TTI on ebay, and once received, suspect it may become my new favorite and the tool I carry most.  I guess that will really make me a multitool polygamist.

Thanks for the tips on the PST history and chronology threads - exactly what I've been looking for.

Chacko: I, however, WON"T be looking into SAKs... or Gerbers ... or SOGs, all great tools and no doubt addictive - addictions I can ill afford!

As for photos, my tool are all pretty standard fare. I do have a couple nice hand made sheaths (I didn't make them).  I'll post a photo once I've learned how to get it out of my camera and on to multitool.org.

Greg

Well, I'm here poking around for the third night in a row.  After reading the previous several posts I am beginning to realize that: 1. there is a point of no return when in comes to collecting MTs, 2. that I am dangerously close to that point, and 3. that multitool.org has pushed a lot of guys over the edge.  Oh well, what a way to go.

Received my first LM Charge (TTI) in the mail today (ebay).  Was listed as in "perfect" condition.  It isn't, but after a very thorough cleaning it is in excellent condition.  My first tool with a cutting hook - I assume this should be very sharp and go through a piece of stout nylon twine easily, but it doesn't.  Doesn't look like it can be sharpened.  Any thoughts?

One more thing, I've run across "EDC" in several posts, what does that stand for?  Thanks.

(Perhaps these types of questions are better asked in a different forum?)

Ask away wherever you'd like, we're not too fussy. :D

EDC means every day carry; something that you'd have on your person every day in other words.

Two ways to sharpen the guthook: either with a small fine abrasive bit in a Dremel tool (go easy) or by hand with a small round diamond file or sharpening stone.

Welcome Greg

This is the friendliest and most informative forum on the interweb  :D :tu:

By the sounds of it you should link your bank account directly to Leatherman

I found this place looking for information on a Gerber Suspension; I now have 3 Leatherman's [see sig] and am in the process of getting a TTi Charge  ::) :D

BTW you need to watch DaveK; he is a bad influence  >:D I think he may be Leatherman's Sales Director

As others said :D

Not that I've tried it myself, but how about a fine bit of 'wet-n-dry' paper on a thin rod of some kind?
