Victorinox Spirit Variant Preference
on: February 01, 2010, 02:22:00 PM
I have been using a Swiss Tool I got from Neil in a very generous trade about a year ago (thanks again Neil  :salute: ) and I also have been carrying a Kick off and on. I like the kick's pliers a little more, and (of course) it is more pocketable, but the ST beats the Leatherman out in every single other category. So I was hoping the Spirit is a little less lofty than the Swiss Tool. Also, is the plier head less blunt on the Spirit than the regular Swiss Tool?

I have decided I would really want to go for the S or X variant, I am just too accustomed to having a clip point blade to give it up. The real question is which is better, the scissors or serrated blade? Personally, it appears to me that the Spirit's scissors are so diminutive that their value might not be as great as the 91mm scissors. In fact, they seem to hardly open, maybe the cutting surface of a 58mm or 74mm. Any input on that is valuable.

I have ruled the original spirit out also because the chisel grind edge/serrations on the one and only blade on the tool seem to greatly restrict it's versatility, plus I am just not all that hot on sharpening serrations. So I would keep the butter knife blade as a backup on the S if I decide on that version.

It's funny, I was wild about "what if" Victorinox made the X version for a long time, but now that it's on the table, I have to weigh out which is more likely to be something I'd miss- a razor sharp backup rough task cutter or the precise (albeit small) scissors.

Cost isn't so much a factor, I think they're all within like $10 of one another and if I decide on the X (most expensive of the three I believe) it's still $10 well spent making sure I have the one I really want.

I have both a Spirit and a Spirit X , I rotate between them . I also want a black oxide S , in case of pirates and Ninjas .

I have a std and a BO "S" . I EDC the std as its the first one I got and its shows sign of use . The BO S is my spare as its unused but is showing signs of wear to the finish ( which is due to me playing with it while watching TV  ::) ) . I did have a X but sold it and to be honest I don't regret it either .

Now Ben ask yourself if you want scissors or a second blade and you will have your answer  :D

Me ? I'd go for the "S" and have the best of both worlds as you can always carry a Classic or Micra on your keys . May I suggest an Alox Classic   ( Thanks Neil  :tu: ) If you do go for an "S" you then have the choice of SS or BO finish  :D

The SSSS (aka S^4 or Stainless Steel Spirit S :P) and a PEfied original Spirit are the only variants I don't have and I can't choose between the rest of them myself... :D The sheepsfoot blade seems awkward at first but it's a great cutter and very innocent-looking. The scissors do not open very wide but they are quite sturdy and cut well. I guess that (as always) it all boils down to your needs.

If you need a plain-edge blade, a serrated blade, and scissors, you can go with either (a) an original Spirit coupled with a dedicated folder/SAK, (b) a Spirit S (BO ) coupled with a small scissors-featuring SAK or Micra, (c) a Spirit X coupled with a dedicated CE/SE folder (or improvise and use the saw as a CE/SE blade of sorts), (d) just a standard Spirit, if the PE portion on the sheepsfoot blade suits your needs.

If you like the sheepsfoot blade shape but hate serrations, you can grind them off. If you don't actually need a serrated blade, go with the X. If you don't actually need scissors, go with an S.

... Endless possibilities... :)

Good post Nikos   :tu:  Ben never underestimate the serrated butterknife blade . It has unbelievable cutting power  :o And if you ever get a Spyderco Sharpmaker you will never have to worry about it being blunt , they really are easy to use .

I think both of the blades are great, and scissors don't see much use with me, so I just carry a Rambler on a keychain. It would be hard for me to choose between the traditional blade and the really enjoyable rounded, serrated one.

At first I wasnt too keen on the butter knife that comes on the std spirit, but it has really grown on me.

1) it cuts very very well, better than most of the other knives on the multitools or knoves that I have. Combo of factors probably contribute to that included the slight curve of the blade, the shape and style of the serrations, and how sharp it was out of the box

2) it doesnt have a point, and has serrations at the end or to the end of the knife, so is great as a safety blade, e.g. cutting off a seatbelt

3) because it doesnt have a point, and rather innocent looking serrations, I am less wary of having the spirit out and about with me in the UK, even though it is technically illegal since it is locking.

4) the spirit comes with an awl anyway, so most of the things you need a sharp tip for, can be carried out with a mroe suited tool anway

Personally I wouldnt even consider the S model, since scissors are one of my most used tools on a multitool. And since I am thinking of EDCing a dedicate folding knife, I actually prefer having a different style of knife with me, rather than the spearpoint on the X model of spirit.

X for me. I find scissors to be my most used tool.

They are a little small, and don't open as wide as others, but they do the basic jobs well enough for me to carry it  :)

I had the original Spirit but just couldn't get on with the knife blade. Overall though, it was still a great tool. When the X was released, I bought 2, and it has been my perfect multi tool since.

Certainly S version for me. Spirit scissors are OK but I'd rather have the serrated edge and pair the thing with a SAK.

I like the regular spirit.

Butter knife blade and all.

I used to prefer the s but the little scissors are better than none.

I actually like the small scissors. They don't open wide but they are so strong and easy to use... for zip ties, metal wire and such they are far above traditional Vic ones...

The more I use my new Spirit (basic version) the more impressed I am with it. I love the butter blade - I'm completely sold on it and wish I could incorporate it into a 91mm SAK.

All the tools have a place - no filler.
