Where to buy : Gerber Solstice?
on: February 01, 2010, 10:12:46 PM
Does anyone know of anywhere that sells the Gerber Solstice? Preferably in the UK.

I think I'm right in saying that its not been produced for a few years now so you might have some trouble tracking one down. :-\  Try an ad in the 'Tools Needed' section someone might be able to help you out.

EDIT - looks like John's managed to prove me wrong. :-[

Don't worry it wasn't a dig, you might be able to find someone who'll have one for even less though.  It never hurts to ask. :tu:

I can pick one up this Friday or Saturday; shipping to the UK should only be $3.  Granted, that's if Target still has some left. :/

Why oh why would anyone want a Gerber Solstice  ???

They are shocking - ask Ben (who slipped one into a parcel he was sending me without telling me, because he knew the deal would be off if he'd told me about it) :D

I used to come here a lot.

Well... I've got a Swiss-Tech Micro-Max, which I use everyday, but I want something with scissors!  :D
Why? Whats wrong with them?

It would be far quicker to tell you what is good about it.

Seriously, I think they suck in every single element they are designed for.  Dave has one so I'll let him fill in the details (hopefully with some pics  :pok:).

I'm back!

Hmm - it's hard to pick out one single negative from a tool that has so, so many......

I'll pick out the main couple:

1 - The handles spin round, rendering the scissors pretty much useless. You just can't get a decent grip on the damn thing without it collapsing on you!

2 - Closing the damn thing takes hours practice. After this, you should only cut yourself doing it occasionally.

3 - The drivers are rubbish.

4 - The can opener is rubbish

5 - The bottle opener is rubbish

6 - When you eventually do get it shut and folded away - it will decide whether it wants to stay that way. You will have NO say in the matter whatsoever.

Oh, sorry - I tried to stop at a couple, but couldn't.

My advice? Get a Micra :)

I suppose I'm in the minority here, but I like the Solstice.  The scissors are very robust , the screwdrivers have a reasonable amount of reach and in my extensive testing, the bottle opener functions well.  It's not Gerber's fault is Dave's tool is all floppy!

Ignoring the smutty innuendo  :P .....

I have often wondered if this one is defective, because it's totally useless!

Mine has seen some use, and one handle is somewhat looser than the other, but I haven't had any significant problems with it holding together or flopping around.  I'll admit that it's a bit of effort to fold up, but it's not nearly the challenge you seem to have with yours.  I would be seriously tempted to fiddle a bit with the rivets holding the legs on and see if you can't somehow tighten them up a bit.  At least, that's what I'd do if mine were that bad.
