Spydercos with Black finishes....
on: February 12, 2010, 09:14:33 PM
May I ask your opinion?  I like the black look on them but I worry that the black finish will wear off over time and look lousy.  Anyone with experience?
Thanks

Also, I'm looking into a Military...maybe black, maybe not.  But there are so many different model numbers listed on ebay, I'm not sure which is good and which to get.  I'd like a combo blade on it for sure though.

any suggestions?

I have a few with black finishes and one happens to be the camo military.  It's holding up quite well.
It will in time show wear and probably alot of it will disappear eventually.  I think though it will give
the knife blade a good look.

Anyone know if there is a listing for the different models of Spyderco Military knives?  I have no idea which ones are better than the others....?
Thanks

If done right (like the Spydie is guaranteed to be) a black coating on a blade can be real tough and can look real nice when worn in.  A good example out of the ones I have is a Kershaw Blackout;

That has seen quite a bit of use and although it's not a great pic, you can still see it's in good nick.

The problems come when a coating is poorly done.  Here is a good example of a poor coating resulting is a lot of patches;

I expect the processes involved can make a huge difference with how long it lasts, and Spyderco are one of the big boys so I reckon you will have no worries there and you should just buy what you like.  :tu:

Yeah it depends on type of coating. Worst is teflon and paint, those come off if you look at them wrong, black oxide is better but not much, then there's vapor deposited tungsten carbide, the only way it comes off is if you grind it with diamond or hit it hard enough to damage the underlying steel. There are also several others that's quite durable but I'm not familiar with, i.e. carbonitride.

Hey Zack,
Thanks for that link!   Very informative!  Can I ask, on this page, http://www.spydiewiki.com/index.php?title=C36_Military , there is a spreadsheet listing the different models.  Under the "edge" column, it lists "PE, SE, and PS".  Does that stand for PE=Plain edge, SE=Serrated edge and PS= Plain and serrated (combo)?

Thanks

Looks like the one I'm looking for then is the C36GBK with the combo blade!

Oh...and I have been shopping around for days now and when you add in the shipping, that was the cheapest I could find anywhere that was new.  I hope I got a good deal...

looks good chili.  :tu:  I just looked and they are about 15 bucks more up here when you factor in
your shipping costs so I'd say it was a good price.  I think you'll like the Military.  It requires a bit
of a deep pocket because of the handle size but fits and carries well within.
