So what in order, are the main attributes you look for in a flash light?

Turns on reliably and stays on.  (Some screwcaps don't maintain good contact)
Bright
Gotta last 6-8 hours on a set of batteries (on some setting).
Glove friendly
Can be held in one's teeth without injury.

Lock-out tailcap
Reverse clicky
A significant enough improvement in brightness over my current EDC
Variable levels

I've only purchased 3 lights over the past year and a half so I don't upgrade often, but when I do the light needs to have the above criteria.

I'd not thought of that one :), despite having to do it a few times, while fixing reluctant motorbikes ::)

Has to have AA or AAA alkaline or Lithium cells. Cheap & easy to find about anywhere. Tail standing is good. Anti roll protection is nice to have on uneven surfaces. A hole for lanyard or keychain carry. Anywhere from 5 to 20 lumens is decent. A clip for ball hat is a nice extra to have for hands free lighting. Water resistant is very nice to have. Dang.. thats the Infiniy Ultra by Gerber!

Reliability , build quality , simple UI ( all I want is high and low , no strobes , sos's and crap to remember ) , well proven - tho not cutting edge LED's and drive systems , ruggedness , good impact/water resistance , good throw on hi , usefull output ( no more than 100 lumens on high ) , good pocket clip , good anodizing .

I'm not hard to please .

honestly, for me it just has to be moderately pocket-able (single 18650 maximum).  Other than that it just has to be as bloody blindingly powerful as possible, even if that means it only lasts an hour on maximum brightness ::) .

Foward clicky with lockout tailcap
good UI (no head twisting to get to different levels for me)
good pocket clip (if it's a small light I would like to be able to clip it to my hat)
multi-level with good spacing and runtime between levels.

Mike,

Quality construction.
High Output.
Forward Clicky Tailcap (preferably).
Easy UI.
Minimal modes, or single mode.
Affordable price.

This is a general list I usually follow, but I have stepped outside this when eyeing something unique that catches my eye.

I don't have a list of requirements but rather I like to take chances with light manufacturers that way I sometimes fall lucky and end up with real gems that work for me,if not I re-sale and off I go again in the search  :salute: In other words I like to keep an open mind when choosing my lights  ;)

Sarcy sod :D

Not really being sarcy mate  :D :D, I am just a bit simple when it comes too torches  :D :D :D.
I should post a picture of a LED torch I got for $15aus it has a telescopic magnet coming out the middle of the lens (looks like an old car radio aerial) that you can use to pick up things dropped in dark cramped places. Bloody thing can pick up a LM Surge  :o :o :o
