Footlockers?
on: February 28, 2010, 03:14:03 AM
Ok, I know I've been eying a Gerstner International Machinist Oak Tool Chest for my EDC collection, but one thing that I've come to realize for my current items that actually need attention, is that my current ~$20 foot locker is falling apart and doesn't provide good security for the valuables I store in it.  Would anyone happen to have suggestions to a nice, durable footlocker, perhaps?  I need one roughly 16x12x32 inches, so I'd be interested in something with roughly the same dimensions.

I have a craftsmen tool box that has a top lid and three rollout drawers that words for me.  When the top lid is closed the drawers can't pull out.  Also has two locking clasps.  Not a footlocker per se, but it works for me.

Old pics, but you can get a general idea of big it is.

Yeah, I'm the one who mentioned it. :P  I'm looking at one for my EDC collection and so on, but I need to focus on a footlocker to replace my current crappy one first. :)

These look cool

These?  :pok:

Not a fan of the camo, but I'm looking at their all-steel model trunks now. :)  Maybe it's just me, but the cedar and plywood models don't look like they'd hold up the best over time. :/

I like both wood and steel, my only concern, however, is that steel would be harder to break through and would be more durable with various moves and whatever a dorm or apartment would bring.

While ammo boxes could work, they're not quite for what I'm looking.  I'm leaning heavily toward the Rhino steel trunk series, though I'll give the Pelican foot locker, too; in all honestly, I need to keep it below $250, and even then that's much more than what I'd like to spend, but it's for a good reason, especially when it comes to transient items in my possession. :/

Eh, the Pelican foot locker - while I know it's made to Pelican's quality, just looks... eh... to me; like a regular storage tub or cooler on steroids without the looks of an actual footlocker. :/

Thanks, sparky; while eBay does have some possibilities, I have to worry about shipping - shipping from trunkoutlet would only cost between $16-35, while at least one person wants $165 in shipping for a $200 locker. @_@  Also, I think, if I do get a Rhino trunk, I'd get the laptop safe and a couple other things for added benefit to me, so I'm thinking of going with them.

With that said, does anyone have experience with either trunkoutlet or Rhino trunks? :/

Lol, the chest is more of a long-term goal... maybe in a couple years; priority for the safety of my items, however, is a sturdy and durable footlocker... my current one is of crappy quality, and it's only been getting worse little by little. :/  I'll be seeing my father today and see what he says.

But yeah, my current actual needs, and not wants, is a footlocker, netbook, and savings, in that order; as for wants, it's flashlights, messenger bag, pocket organizers, and machinist chest, in that order.  I really don't have many wants or needs due to being a university student, which also limits income - granted, I could get them /all/ now if I wanted to, but that wouldn't be the wisest course of action until I mostly clear my for sale items. :/  I don't like charging items when I don't have the money to back up the entire purchases, hence going little by little.

Sounds very sensible of you  :tu:
I love those Gerstner chests but they are too good for my tools
I have wanted a large tool chest in my garage for all my tools for years
I managed to get one last year when I had some spare cash and I'm still
rounding up and sorting out my tools and garage

See, I see the footlocker as a true need - I honestly can't store my items too safely down here as of right now, and that needs to be rectified; the machinist chest would be used for my EDC items, but at the same time, when I think about it, I don't have that many items, nor do I intend to increase my collection much beyond what I do have, with the exception of upgrading and replacing every once in a while, so I don't know if I'll ever actually end up with the machinist chest.  I guess it's just an idea that has some basis in what I actually want:  a storage chest made out of a dark stained hardwood that is made to my liking.  I don't know; maybe it'll be a good project for an uncle and I over summer. *shrugs*

Ok, so if I do order front trunkoutlet, it'll be a Large Rhino Steel Trunk, 32x18x14 LxWxH, in black with the hardwood trunk tray (which costs less than if purchased later  :pok:), and the removable wheels.  I'm skipping on the lock options due to finding a video where I learned how to unlock one of those Fortress Combination locks in less than thirty seconds... so my only deciding factor now is if I want the Honeywell 3040D laptop safe; I've heard some good things and some bad things about it, including the fact that it's too thin and easy to break into from a couple people.  Would it even be worth the extra $90 to have it permanently installed into the footlocker? :/
