Picked up a Commander
on: February 28, 2010, 08:08:34 AM
Blowing out the old stock so they can bring in the new it was just too good to resist
and I picked up this one in Satin finish.  The new ones look nice as well with the
Stonewash but of course you'll pay the full pull on one of those.
This is new but really old stock as the date on the blade is 2006.  Nice souvenir to remember
the 2010 Winter Olympics here in Vancouver by.

Thanks guys.  :)

I have a couple other Emerson's and have been carrying them around of late.

Ben,  I was searching for those pic's of your commander but came up short.  I know you posted
them in one of the threads.

I thought it was going to be a bit heavy but I am surprised at how lite it really is given the size.

Ah, thanks for posting them again.  Looks great.  Interestingly enough mine is numbered 2713 with
the Satin finish and has the year 2006 on the blade.

The Commander is a great knife! I think you`ll like it. I`ve got several. Got my first one in march 99. I havent carried a EKI lately as I`ve been on a Spyderco kick since the summer of 08. My favorite EKI is the CQC 8 aka the banana.
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

Ah very nice!  Would love to see a pic of your '99.  I have the Horseman which is a mini 8.

Those are nice David thank you for the pic.  I see they brought back the blade swedge for '10.
Mine doesn't have it but I see your old one does.  I think it finishes the profile of the blade
nicely.

Nice pics of your Commander Sean. Do you reckon you`ll like those serrationd on the recurve blade?

David, thanks. :)  Yeah I know I'm probably in the minority here but I love combo edges.  I don't
have a problem with sharpening them and so often for me I need serrations but not fully so.
I figured with the Commander it had a big enough blade for both and I wouldn't feel
under-edged either way.  :tu:

Didn't emerson change the non-locking liner to SS instead of Ti? Wonder if you got one before that since it's new olds stock.

Jz,
Are you saying the old one's used stainless instead of Ti?  I see the new one's apparently
are sporting ti liners.  If I was a betting man and looking inside they seem to have the
same look as my other Em's but I'm not sure.  ???

There were some in 07 and 08   that had the non locking side liner stainless how many and if that is still being done I do not know. I havent kept up on EKI the last couple years so that info may be wrong.

I peered into the cavity more closely on the Commander and compared it to the Horsman
I have and if either one isn't titanium it has me completely fooled!  They look exactly the
same on both knives, same shade and finish etc.  I could be wrong but...

ah this just in...  from our resident Emerson expert "Haze" on Blade Forums and I quote...

"If it's an 06 then it's safe to say thay it does have Ti liners. IIRC it was not untill late 07 the SS liner was used, and that was only on a couple of models as well.

This is a subject of some debate and I don't think I have ever seen a solid answer as to when the change was actually made in full and on what knives the change started with."

I knew Haze would know. Another way to tell is stick a magnet up next to it.  If it sticks then its SS, if not then its Ti.  Of course Emerson uses 303 SS on the liners, so it doesn't stick much, but it will stick slightly.

My Kreined 7 I just traded to GG I believe had both Ti liners.  I think it was an 07 model.

Looks like you have it figured out. I just remember seeing people complaining about how emerson cheaped out and started using SS in liners, looks like there were enough of them that he didn't implement it all the way. Do you know if he switched back or still using it in some models?

Jz,  I think they are back to using titanium on all models.  I've heard nobody mention
otherwise and apparently it was a pretty temporary thing when they used the one
side stainless, just for part of one year? ???

I was a great knife...but it was always a means to an end.  The end being a Sebenza.
