$2000 toolset that comes with a free wheelchair.
on: February 28, 2010, 08:44:03 PM

I recently purchased a new wheelchair, and much to my surprise and tool-collecting delight discovered that a small set of tools was included with the chair.  It's a Philips head screwdriver, adjustable wrench, a set of hex keys, a pair of specifically sized hex wrenches, and what I think is a special socket for taking off an embedded bolt.  Nothing particularly new to my collection, but it was nice of the manufacturer's to include it.

Well that was decent of them. :salute: Do wheelchairs require a lot of maintenance then?
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

They should commission a special Spydiewrench wheelchair edition or something. Cool that it comes with something useful though - you get less in some cars!  :D

So, pics of new wheels too then?  :pok:

Surprisingly, no.  I've had my previous chair about eleven years, and I'd say (conservatively) had no more than half a dozen instances where I had to replace a part or so.  After the first four years, it might have needed something once a year or so.

That said, tweaking this new chair, trying to get it ready for real world use, has required a bit more work.

That's the only one I have at the moment.  I'd take more, but I'm sitting in it at the moment, so the best I could offer would be the footrests and some upside down shots of the wheels. :)

That is nice of them.

My mother had a particularly horrid model that did require a lot of maintenance. It was a special chair made in France that moved by a single hand lever. You pumped the lever back and forth to propel yourself, and used the other to turn. It was infinitely complex, and she did love it due to her paralysis on the left side. It basically gave her freedom, but what a PITA to fix all the time. It would have been nice if they had included a maintenance kit with it.

Oddly enough, I am looking at that tool set and I can't help but think you might be better off trying to find an old Gerber Cool Tool

The new chair looks pretty cool- and I promise not to make any comments about red ones being faster than the chrome ones!  :D

You know, I've always wondered if you really did use a wheelchair or just liked the avater lol.

You know, if I bought something that expensive and it came with a full toolset I'd be a little concerned about the quality. Kinda like the manufacturer saying " Here, you're probably gonna need these if you ever expect this thing to work for any length of time" :p

But no, that is really cool of them to actually have the foresight to inlude the basic maintenance tools, especially since a lot of people who use wheelchairs may very well not have many tools laying around.

Red is definitely the way forward... I likes it  :tu:

Looks like it's not too heavy either. Hopefully it will serve you as well as the last one did

Probably the cup holder upgrade because, you know, a simple thing as a cup holder increases it's cost a heck of a lot of money.  ::)

They can get a lot more expensive than that. I was told by someone who works in the health care industry that a lot of the cost is to cover liability insurance.
