A False alarm , or why I don't trust pocket clips .
on: March 02, 2010, 04:10:11 AM
Fri , I found I was missing my Strider PT , a rather pricey folder ! Basically , the seat belt fairy had snagged it , while I was riding as a passenger in my buddy's truck . Luckily , by the grace of God it ended up on the floorboards of the truck - as opposed to outside in a snow bank .

Strider clips are Ti , and have better than average grip strength , mine had been reformed a bit to tighten it up .

Bottom line , pocket clips are like saftey catches on pistols , to be used , but never fully trusted . Short term parking only ! For work , or strenuous outdoor stuff all my good kit is in tight fitting pouches or holsters .

I have lost a couple of nice folders to the pocketclip poltergeist , no more !

Pocket clips are very secure for IWB carry , and are OK when covered by a well fastened pocket flap .

It is a good warning to others, but would it not be wiser to keep knives clipped either IWB or in your front pocket?  Back pocket carry - unless you're simply talking about a bandanna, handkerchief, or writing pad, or for dangling a keychain into the other rear pocket from a Victorinox Key Keeper.

It was clipped in my front pocket , of a pair of Wrangler Rigs cargo pants - they have a leatherlike reenforcement on the right front pocket .

Thanks for the reminder. I need to make a safety lanyard for my XM-18.   :tu:

I have had the same problem with carrying a knife in my right front pocket.  I was quite upset when I thought I'd lost my Scibeer modded micarta OHT.

"Dummy " cords are actually for smart people ! GG , an XM18 is way to valuable and hard to replace to trust to a pocket clip !

The only one I trust in my pocket is the UKPK. It seems to have a very tight little clip, which combined with G10 scales keeps a nice firm grip on my pockets. That said, I wouldn't trust it on a slippery fabric like my quick drying hiking trousers.  :-\

If I'm doing something ruff and tumbly , I clip to a parcord lanyard , and drop the whole issue inside my shirt or overalls ,

Never had a problem with a tool falling out with a pocket clip on it myself.  Keep the tool to the back of the pocket and they seem plenty secure to me.
