CT bit layer - four double-ended bits plus 4mm hex insert driver - nine functions. :P  Ten if you include the bit holder itself.  :D

OK you win. :D  In my defence I don't actually have a bit driver, I didn't realise you got 4 bits in it, for some reason I assumed it only had 3. :-[

Except for Neil's CT-ultralight, the bit holder carries three double-ended bits each, while the driver carries another one. :)

I dunno if I would count the different bits as separate functions...they all have the same purpose...turning fasteners.

You're right, even I find them hard to justify.  Most canned food these days comes with a pull off top so they're not even particularly handy at home let alone out on the trail.

That said a couple of years back I was out camping with a few buddies, one of them did have some canned food with him for his evening meals.  All was fine on the first night as the can was a pull top, not so the second when he realised that it was a traditional can and he had no opener, he had thought all of them were pull tops.  Needless to say I had a SAK on me (Huntsman IIRC) so all was well, but that really is the only time I can think of that I unexpectedly needed a can opener.

In the end though, much like the corkscrew, I much prefer to have a SAK with a can opener than one without.  It's just one of these tools that a SAK should have. :)

I agree.  I don't think I could go without a can opener on at least one of the Vic's I'm carrying.  It is the best staple puller around and that goes a long way in an office where all your stuff gets  moved on your desk everyday by people who have no business at your desk in the first place.  Annnddd breathe!  vent over.   :D

Actually, not really.   I'm just wondering if there are any perks such as those that accompany a MT.O charter membership, ie free crap!

Two things are missing from this picture:  a bucket of warm water with your hand in it, and a sharpie beard on your face!

Just to clarify, I was like that due to exhaustion and being ill, it sadly wasn't self inflicted.  So drawing a beard :B: on me may have been a bit harsh.  :D

Woah!! Necro!!  :D

Recently I've been using the can opener on the Tourist I keep in the kitchen a little more, as the store bought can opener I have is a bit shoddy - and everytime I go shopping I forget to get another

I'm amazed at how often the need for a can opener comes up, especially when it's the the only one around.  Not to mention the screwdriver tip.  I've been enjoying the combo tool on my Compact, it works well for double-duty.

I can say that it's been a while since I've needed a can opener. It came in real handy when I would go out for training while I was in the Army. The rations we would get would require a can opener sometimes and I would usually be the one with one that had one that really worked. Keeping it sharp sometimes would be an issue though.

I use the can opener relatively often to open cans of concentrated tomato. I find it useful.

We were going through our food situation for the hurricane, and a fair bit of our cans are traditional ones without a pull ring.  I held a little class on how to use a Wenger can opener this morning so when the electric one doesn't work, nobody will starve if I'm not around.  ;)

I have started using the can opener on my Wave a TON at work.  I'm on the road all the time and I use it to open dinner typically.  I use it so much that I could not be without it.

I don't use a can opener that much, but I would like to add that if relying on canned food I think it as good to have a can opener lying around, even if the cans do have a pull ring. The pull ring may break, and especially in an emergency it's good to make life as easy as possible for oneself.
