It took me quite a while to get the bits together to make a 'forge' and get a round to having a go at heat treating  ;)

I managed to heat it up and hammer out the curve (more or less), left it to cool down which should leave the steel soft enough to work on  :tu:

When I tried to drill it I found that its still too hard and ruined some cobalt drills on the handle   :o

I was going to reheat it but as I have run out of charcoal and time (as I wanted to show it off at the meet) and I was going to make some more orange micata for the handle but time and materials again  ::)

So I think to myself I will put a 'temporary' handle on just for the meet
I had an old directors chair in my garage that came to an unhappy ending
this is what I did with one of the arm rests  :D

I need to see if I can get an edge on it now and fine tune the handle

Thanks Gareth

I could do with hanging around a blacksmiths workshop just to watch and learn, there's so much I don't know   :ahhh

I can't wait to have a play with it, I will be bringing it to the meet if I don't break it before then  :D

Tony I was at a Canadian hippy fair recently & they had a blacksmith display/presentation. The miniature forge looked a sweet set up so I took some pics & videos.

The wee forge's air pump re minds me of a old air raid warning siren or a shark alert siren used on Aussie beaches in times gone by  ::) :D :D. The wee thing sure got HOT  :o 8) 8) 8). It looks like quite a speSmurfpillsed air pump  , the old guy in the vid said most Canadian farmers had a similar set up back in the olden days. Maybe you might find one at a rural car boot sale  :D :D

Tony happy to send you my still photos if you want mate :tu: :tu:, I have not uploaded them yet.

I've used one of those hand cranked air blowers before, they certainly give you a good work-out. :D

Just noticed this thread and thought I would share what I use. I use an old wheel from a car with the tire removed as my base of the forge. I used a piece of 1/4 steel on the bottom to keep the charcoal from dropping through. Also had an old valve of sorts that fit my shop vac   I put the valve on the end of the hose, put vacuum on blow, and now I have an adjustable air flow. :). I hope this helps some.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

That is looking really good mate. Did you harden it again after the softening for the holes in the handle.

Knowing what you're like with taking stuff off, I feel the need to say "take it easy" ;)

Though it does look like the bottom of the handle could do with a little smoothing out.

Great looking bit of micarta chap :tu:
