Dix Leatherworks
on: March 12, 2010, 04:40:02 AM
This sheath maker was in Canada.  I ordered a pst and solitaire sheath from him and a sheath for a paratool some years ago and the quality was top notch.  Some others have had problems with him and it seems that he is out of business.  Does anyone know the real story as to what happened?

Sadly most Artisan/Craftsman types have a tuff time making ends meet , if I had to guess ; probably happened to him too . Most people don't know schlock from primo quality , and so expect schlock type pricing for top quality goods .

The quality was great but you are right most people will not spend the money for quality workmanship.

Very true.

That is a tough business to get into. I know many who went into shoe repairs to make ends meet.

I did it full time for about a year , there are lots of much easier ways to make a living . I now pretty well only do it for friends , or to augment my beer money .

I know a fella who makes a good buck on BDSM stuff like paddles and straps . I have thought about it before . A leather paddle with a kydex spring in the handle might be just the ticket .

That wouldn't be that hard to make. I know there is a book out there on how to make whips.

I have both made and commissioned leather sheaths before, but I agree, most people don't seem to be willing to pay for, or even recognise quality.

Whips are quite hard to make , very fancy braiding etc . Some were very finely crafted . I have a couple of old books - a whole artform in and of itself . A lot of BDSM stuff is designed to make scary noise but do minimal damage .
