SOG + Sand = Fail
on: March 13, 2010, 07:15:13 AM
I came back from the beach yesterday with my SOG Power Lock S60 which had served admirably but had been carelessly dropped onto the sand a dozen times(by Me).

Figured a little dust-off would take care of it......it didn't...

Oh well....hot water surely will....no way....

Seems that once sand gets into this multi, it needs to be disassembled and cleaned.... But then again....

That's why I took the PL.

Now before anybody asks what the heck I was doing with a SOG S60 in the beach...at night...yeah at night...

I was trying my new firesteel so I needed a small saw to cut a few small branches that would be used as fuel, a knife to shave the wood nicely to make some kindling and some strong pliers to crack open dry dead coconut husks to get to the micro fibers that would catch the sparks from the steel. Of course I would be in a corrosive area, so no one in their right mind would take a tool that easily corrodes.

Bottom line: Don't put your multi tools in the sand....

Count yourself lucky you didn't bring a SAK, then you'll never get those sand out. I once got one particle into the pivot of a pinned knife, took me forever with compressed air, toothbrush, warm tap water to get it out.

I would say SOG+ Sand+ insufficient de-oiling = trouble. The sand sort of just sticks onto the surface that has the machine oil on, and when you open or close the handles you can just feel it...  >:(

Sand is the worst enemy of multitools and SAKs. I get the heebie-jeebies every time I see one of Dunc's beachside photos :(
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Sand is the tropical reincarnation of the devil.  Its great for kicking back and playing volleyball but SUCKS FOR ANYTHING ELSE besides sandblasting...(sand is kinda necessary for sandblasting  )  Mud and paricles are one of the main reasons that my major requirement of a multi is ease of cleaning

I did this to a SAK once, never again!  Took me ages to get rid of the grinding feeling in the blade pivot. :(

I recently bought a SAK of failBay that was the worst I had ever seen.  It would seem that someone melted wax mixed with gum and dipped the knife into it, then tossed it into a bucket of sand for a week, followed by a trip through the dryer to make sure that the wax/gum was securely adhered and also to deposit enough lint to knit a sock from.

Oddly enough it looked fantastic in the picture!  I actually had to drill out the pins, disassemble it, and soak all the parts in acetone for an hour, then scrub each part individually with more acetone.  the scales are gone, they weren't worth the trouble.  If it weren't for the tinkerer in me, the whole thing would have gone in the trash bin long ago, but I have this need to rebuild it.  Awaiting more SAK medical supplies from Rotokid so I can operate.

I have a little to say on this topic  :D  I don't have alot of choice about sand , I live so close to the beach I can feel the waves break beneath my feet in a storm standing in my house  :o I'm a big user of both Vic and LM but I've used Vic far more on the beach . These uses range from a simple photo shoot and the tool falls off the post into the sand right up to turning ( In a hurry ) a capsized sailing boat over in heavy surf to check if anyone was trapped underneath which involved much cutting of lines and rope . I must say Vic tools have come out of this very well . Compressed air is your friend followed by a run under the tap and a good wash with the help of a small brush like the ones you get with an electric razor . I don't want to sound biased towards Vic but I havnt really tested the other brands so much .
In my day job I'm currently using LM's as part of a long term test and while I work at the mouth of a salt water river there is no sand  ::)

But you guys are right , sand is the sporn of the devil . Its in my car , my house , my shoes and once or twice even my bed ( don't ask  ;) ) but for me its just something I'm used to .

Dunc

never had any experiences with tools and sand, but I pulled a few dozen rawl plugs out of a plaster and brick wall the other day with my sog, took me ages to get all the fine plaster and brick dust out...

<<UPDATE>>

Today on Man Vs Sand:

The SOG was dismantled on one table and piece by piece washed in the sink with hot water and dish soap.

The pieces were laid on another table on a clean towel.

After realizing I made the mistake of separating the tools and washers of each side but not memorizing where in each side every tool went.

I assembled and disassembled the tool twice until everything moved fine.

Although unnecessary on a SOG's AFAIK; everything was soaked in WD40 during assembly.

Finally the tool was fully assembled!

BUT WAIT..

There's still crackling!

Apparently there was still sand in the little corners of the lock tab pins that go into the body.

I proceeded to do this for a while ->  :ahhh

It didn't help...

So I guess I'll have to do it again and this time, pressure steam the locks as well.

It's a lot better tho...and now I can say I've taken an MT apart and put it back together without sending it to the factory.

Oh well...we live....we learn...

Stupid sand

I used a pair of vice grips to take apart my mini and get sand out not too long ago.  there was black soot on the plier head and sand in the pivots.  I'm guessing 4th of july on the beach?
