What flashlight should I buy?
on: March 15, 2010, 09:43:34 PM
Hello everyone, I'm new here.
I used the search but my poor English does not help me decide. Can you help?

What and why?

- Fenix LD01

- LiteFlux LF2XT BLK

- 4seven quark mini 123

- 4seven quark mini AA

- Nitecore EZ AA

- Nitecore EZ 123

Thanks,
Jose

How many lumens do you want? Clicky or Twisty? This will help narrow it down to what your looking for.

The lumens are not something decisive in my choice. I will study this more.
I'll take it in the pants pocket, what is best to not accidentally turn it on? Clicky or Twisty?

Typically twisties are less likely to turn on in your pocket.

What is the difference between the AAA battery and CR123A?

$$$$ more money for the Cr123A & might be hard to find if your in the country like I am. I can always find AA or AAA batteries about anywhere. I don't know the situation in Spain though. Welcome to our Forum BTW. Almost forgot, 10 lumens is really bright in the dark of night in the country. In the city with ambiant light everywhere you might want to go to 30-80 lumens or higher.

Welcome to the forum mate :)

Ok if it was up to me I'd pick the Infinity Ultra AA, as it's the finest close range task light I've used :)

Plus it'll run off an AAA battery if you can't find and AA's :)

Having said that, I'm a big fan of the Fenix range, and you really can't go wrong with any of them :)

Very well said Mike! I personally like to stick with AA or AAA's. Much more easy to find.

CR123's are shorter than either AA or AAA , = shorter overall length . CR123 is a more energy dense cell . Primaries are not too bad if bought in quantity .

From all accounts Nitecore is the best built of the Chinese lites , Fenix has been around for a while , and is well regarded .

The others you mention , can't comment on .

Best way to select is based on intended use , size , budget etc . How do you intend to carry it etc. Do you intend to use primry or rechargeable cells ? If you ask a simple question , to 20 flashaholics you will get 25 answers .

Most importantly , welcome to the forum .

Chris

'Tis true.  That's why we need to know more about how you're going to use this light what type of cell is convenient to power it.

If you are a cop wanting to use it in conjunction with a pistol , it would be a different set of considerations to what a hiker would need . Rechargables open up numerous choices depending on battery chemistries . If you are a mountaineer , or ice climber - extreme cold can be a large factor in choosing a battery type .

In cold environments, Li ion batterys are the only way to go.  All others will suffer marked reduction in performance.

Lithium primaries perform better in cold environments than Li-Ion do.  NiMH LSD would be my second choice.  Li-Ion is much better than alkaline, however.

Didn't know there was a difference... ???

I just use Energizer Lithium batteries for mountaineering/ice climbing.

Yeah, those are 3.0V lithium primaries (non-rechargeable).  Li-Ion are the 3.7V rechargeable type.

Firstly thank you to everyone for the welcome and for all the answers.

I will try to give you a little more information about my needs.
My job is to direct the building of houses and sometimes I review poorly lit areas.
I´m looking for a small light to carry. For me it will be easier to find in my town batteries type AA and AAA.
My budget is $ 70 but if I spend $ 50 best for me ;-)

I dismiss the following models: 4seven quark mini 123 and Nitecore EZ 123.
There are now: Fenix LD01, LiteFlux LF2XT BLK, 4seven quark mini AA and Nitecore EZ AA but I introduce another options: Nitecore D10 SP

Thanks aganin

If you're buying a twisty, I'd take the Q-MiNi over the NiteCore.  Otherwise, I'd buy the NiteCore D10.
