What do you put your PSK in?
on: March 17, 2010, 02:14:33 AM
I'm planning on build a PSK, not pocket sized but rather something I can throw in my pack if I may need it.

Original plan was to use an otter box, but after reading the specs a little I found they are really bulky, adding over an inch in every dimension, which would change the size quite a bit on something this size.

So now I'm not sure what to put it in anymore, maybe a nylon pouch? It wouldn't be waterproof or nearly as sturdy thou. Any suggestions?

It may not be the most "tactical" of answers but have you thought about a Tupperware type box?  Strong near-unbreakable plastic, infinite choice of sizes and waterproof.  Some types will have clip down lids that are very unlikely to come open.  I've used them for food stuffs when hiking and never had an issue.

Just an idea. :)

Haha, you know, I actually never thought about that. But you are right, they would be quite functional.

Personally, in a pack that size isn't a huge concern, throw it all in a Nalgene. To me, it is more practical than Tupperware, since you have a bottle for water in an emergency now.

Alternatively, I put my smaller kits for day-trips in a 1L, up to 5L depending on how much gear you want, drysack. Drysacks are waterproof, strong, can be used in a pinch to patch your jacket, and slide super easy in and out of a pack. Zip-lock baggies are the same thing on the cheap side, but don't last as long.

I use Otterboxes. You're right about the sizes, the are a bit bulky but they seem pretty indistructable. And the smaller ones are waterproof aswell unlike the small Pelican boxes. If you are looking for a watertight box that does not going to be under a lot of stress, I would go with the Tuperware kind of boxes mentioned before. An added bonus of those is that you just can steal them from the wife or from the person who has probably the best assortment,...........your mom  :D

Hehe, I'm SOL, my mom doesn't use tupperware.

I think the ideal container is a relatively fat wide mouth all SS bottle, so it can function as a water container/boiler as well, but all the ones I've seen are either too tall or mouth is too small.

The mouth on these is about 45-50mm wide if that's any good?

Still would be difficult to retrive anything without dump everything out thou, I'm thinking something more like pot shaped, but with a screw on lid to keep it watertight, but I've never seen anything like that in local stores.

I think of a PSK as something you have on your person at all times you've got pants on, and closeby when you don't have pants on :P

For that an Altoids tin is perfect IMO; cheap, light and sturdy.  I was actually just sketching a design for a leather belt sheath for an Altoids tin...

Heh, yeah, but I already carry a lot of crap on me, knives, tools, lights, firesteels, and at times lighters etc, so I figure as far as altoid type is concerned, I'm decently covered.

I reckon a Bills Urban Wallet would fit a small kit in quite nicely. I use mine for my EDC urban PSK stuff :)

For Packrafting I use the Trangia 210 Mess Tin with lid and detachable, insulated handle. A strip of pvc electrical tape waterproofs the lid/base edge. I store the handle inside the tin, which holds a good range of gear.

The Mess Tin can be used to gather and boil water and as a cook pot and mug. The lid can be used as a spoon or trowel if needed. Its the ability to gather, store and boil water, and to use as a cook pot and mug that makes this my PSK container of choice.

Size: 6.5 x 3.5 x 2.6 inches. Weight: 5.6 oz.

This Mess Tin is also available without the handle and in a larger size, 7.8 x 5.1 x 2.8 inches.

I wanted to add a boiling container to my daypack PSK...so I cut the top off a Swiss M32 canteen, reversed it and made it into a slipcase type container. It is expandable, I added a few inches to the vertical webbing strap with that in mind.

Sorry for bringing this back from the dead but that swiss canteen setup is excellent.  I might use that idea.

One question for Spork... does the "canteen" part get stuck in the cup at all or because you sanded the green paint off it slides in and out without problems.  I know with US canteens(plastic ones), they are pretty tight in the canteen cup.
