Wife's second interview.
on: March 18, 2010, 12:22:03 AM
So the wife had her second interview today for a counseling position at a large private school about 30 mins away from us.  It went well; they like her a lot.  Pay is a little lower than we had hoped, but they are giving us an apartment with all utlities paid, which is a big plus.  She doesn't have to drive (she hates driving) and we don't have to pay rent.  So, send us some good vibes.  If she does get it, I will probably become a stay at home dad for awhile.

Yeah it consumed most of ours too when I was working.  And she would be making more money than I was, which an even better bonus.  Of course she wouldn't start till August, but we could move in to an apartment in June if one was available.  She should find something out in the next two weeks.

So, Ree was sent a job offer on Friday, but the offer was for about 5,000 below what a school counselor makes in the public school system.  She sent probably one of the best counter offer letters I had ever read.  No where did she say she didn't want the job, actually it was quite the opposite.  However, the school called back today to say they felt "vulnerable" and were going to look for other candidates, and we would no something for next tuesday by 3:00 PM.  Needless to say we are devastated, and she is having a real rough go at it...thoughts and prayers our way please.

Well she didn't ask for the 5,000 she deserved but merely 1,200 (basically and extra 50.00 a paycheck).  They are interviewing 2 other candidates now, but they have been very unorthodox from the start.  They asked questions that you are not allowed to ask during an interview (age, sex, marital status, my employment status, children, religious beliefs, etc) so now we have to wait a week.  If they do not give her a job I will be filing a formal complaint with the EEOC, because the pay was based off of her age as well, not her credentials, which are more than some counselors twice her age.

Yep.

And even if she does get the job, she should keep an ear out for other opportunities, possibly moving when convenient.  I doubt it gets better after working there...

Hardball she is not used to.  This is one of her first real interviews that has gone this far.  I am used to negotiating salaries, did it all the time in my previous life, but this is another universe for her.  I have coached her much as I can, but they were throwing out questions that I had never seen.

Kinda my feelings at this point.  Its just school counselor positions are so few and far between, that if you get one, you basically die there.  She can do other things as she is a licensed community counselor as well, but the pay is worse and the hours are longer.

I gotta say they sound like a very odd lot to me. :-\  I've never once heard of any potential employer describe themselves as "vulnerable". ???

I hope everything pans out well Zack. :tu:
