Damn good time, and in the one picture I am trying to wipe moisture from the 'stache, not pickin my nose!

Def

No pick! ;D

Sorry, since there was kind of a Seinfeld groove going on I had to say it.  Even though I was a bit late to the thread.

Well, I made it across the next lake last night and boy, what an experience that was!

The lake I live on is part of a canal that stretches across the entire province I live in.  The next lake upstream is about a mile away and is a little bigger than the lake I am on, but I was feeling adventurous.  My goal is to eventually kayak the whole canal, but for yesterday I just wanted to find where the canal entered the lake.

So, off I went.  I had a nice leisurely paddle across "my" lake, then went on to the next one.  There's a couple of small islands on that lake, which I found are very pretty close up.  Once I passed the islands however, was where my adventure started!  It began with a slight "pushing" sensation on the backside of my kayak which eventually built into some noticeable swells.  This really wouldn't have been a big deal in just about any other boat, or if I wanted to continue in the direction of the swells, but where I wanted to go was about 90 degrees to them!  For those of you who have never been in a real kayak, they are VERY easy to tip!  And, because I was in the middle of a fair sized lake, it would have been a hell of a swim to shore, dragging the kayak behind me!

As you can no doubt guess from the fact that I am here and posting, it all turned out well, but at the time it was quite...  exhilarating!

Pictures next time, I promise!

I broke out a shiny new SOSAKOnline carabiner to attach my Ranger 57 to my PFD.

As much as i love sak's and multi's i think I'd have gone for a fixed blade as a rescue knife.

That would have been my choice too, but I really don't have much selection left in the fixed blade department at the moment.  I have an old Puma that my father gave me, but I wouldn't carry that.  It's a pre-64 and rusts very easily, plus the sheath is showing it's age as well, meaning I would lose it before I'd ever use it.  I also have a Cold Steel Master Tanto in San Mai III, but I don't consider a tanto blade as much of an outdoors knife.  I have a Cold Steel Tru Flight thrower, but no sheath for it.  And, I have two bayonets, one from Victorinox and one from Wenger, but as typical bayos go they don't take or hold much of an edge.  If there was much of a chance of being attacked on the open water by mounted cavalry, I'd probably carry one of them!

I'm looking at a few of Cold Steels cheaper, big blades, like one of the kukri machetes, which would make an excellent emergency and woods knife.

Yeah a big blade would be the way to go after after a big dunking in the big blue, i would imagine getting a fire going would be a bit important! :)

I,m a huge fan of the coldsteel range of knives and I'm sure they'll all see ya right :)

Honestly, the large bladed knife would likely be lashed to the boat, so in the event of somehow getting tangled while dunking it will probably be the Ranger, clipped to my PFD, or the OutDoor Edge Wedge hanging around my neck that would save me, not any big honkin knife!  Of course the kukri will be handy for all kinds of other things in the campsite, especially since I probably won't have an axe with me.

It may not look like much, but this is the route I went on the other day.  From the green arrow to the highway that separates the two lakes is about a mile (1.5kms) then once I got into the open part of the next lake, past the two islands the swells began.  If you see the point in in my route at the top right you see a small stream that meets the lake.  That's actually the canal that crosses the entire province.

If you look at this map here:

http://shubie.chebucto.org/images/CanalMainMap.jpg

You'll notice waaaay down at the bottom is the parts I was on.  Lake Banook is the one I am on, and Lake Micmac is the one with the two tiny islands.  It should be a hell of a fun challenge to do the whole thing!

Yikes, I can see that a trip down the entire canal would be quite an adventure. Is there anyone else nearby with a kayak you could team up with? These sort of things can be more fun (and safer) with two people.

Not really.  Sad thing is, I don't have any friends in my timezone!  I may try to sucker my wife's cousin or something but I'll more than likely end up doing it myself.

But that's ok- I'm invincible! :P

Oh hell yeah.  What's the point of a misadventure if you can't laugh about it (and yourself) later on?

The difficult part of course is, once I do the canal, what's the next challenge?  I mean it'll be a nice trip, but I hate living on past glory.

Maybe next summer you should keep a few cold ones in the back of the fridge for when a really tired looking kayaker shows up at your door after tackling the St Lawrence!   ;D

Provided I survive it, it will be great!

The whole thing should take 3- 4 days, so there will be some good camping in there too.  I'm also planning to bring along my 3 man inflatable too, just in case.  You have LOTS of room in a 17 foot kayak for storage, plus with the amount of stuff you can lash to the outside, it's really versatile.

As for the weight, I am getting a small cart for it this week- it's a small folding frame with removable wheels, and the whole thing also tucks away inside the 'yak when not in use.

I figure some water, some food (hopefully I can get my hands on some MRE's) a tent, sleeping bag and I should be just about set.

"Interesting" wouldn't be the word if you were the guy in front of or behind him!

In fact, I think you'd have numerous words that are significantly shorter than "interesting" to share with him if you were directly in front or behind him!

Why do you think I stay the hell away from salt water?

Of course, it would be worse if you were in a boat like this one!

In case anyone was wondering, I checked Snopes and according to them, it's a real photo.  It seems somewhat fudge-making to me... I wonder who drew the short straw and got to test it?
