3D televisions
on: March 26, 2010, 06:48:17 PM
So here lately at work i've been traveling around installing and setting up the new 3D televisions. From what i've seen they are worth the cash. I was watching Monsters vs Aliens on the demo loop and it's amazing. We are supposed to start selling more and more 3d movies. Avatar comes out on Blu-ray 3d in September i think. ESPN is gonna jump in with sports in 3d.

I imagine porn will cause 3d tv to become a mainstay just like it boosted VHS sales back in the 80s. Yes a customer already asked if we carried 3d porn ::) :-\

Imagine sitting on that guys couch :dwts:

ActionLink, Premium, or another company, Pacu?  My father works for both and I was hired by Premium for a job setting up those very same endcaps - of course, we were missing a sign, the DVD, and the glasses, so I wasn't able to ooh and ahh the endcap. :(  That day my Explorer Plus and Spirit X came into play quite a bit - still annoyed that I lacked the necessary allen wrenches. ~_~

The whole 3D thing strikes me as a cash grab by Hollywood and the A/V industry.

especially when you see things like this: http://hdguru.com/best-buy-offers-bogus-3d-sync-service/1415/

BestBuy Project Team--one week and i'm already doing replacement orders for the 3d glasses because  they keep getting manhandled. I used my wave quite a bit putting the stands together. :D

All a case of whatever for me as I have no 3D vision.  Still, it should mean in a few years I can get some real closeout bargains on old 2D kit :D
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I recall if you watch 3D long enough it screws up your brain's balance/depth perception, at least temporarily.

I went to the local Futureshop and saw the 3D TV display for the first time a few days ago.

I will say, the effect is great. However, after watching it for only 5 minutes, I started to get a headache. Count me out on this one...

I saw that Avatar movie in the cinema and besides the movie itself, the 3d effect was pretty cool. I would like that in my house. But not always, I don't want to put on some glasses  8) looking a movie or whatever and browsing the internet at the same time. That will screw up your brain more than beer I guess  :D

3D video games actually already exist, been around for a year or so.  Most recent TV's actually already support 3D, they just didn't advertise it.  So people may be going out to but a new 3D tv when they already have one and just don't know it, lol.
I hope this 3D gimmick sticks around, so it'll drive down 2D tv's prices.  Personally I hate this 3D fad, you'd have to make a movie cost LESS if I were going to see it in 3D, not more.

"they"(the cinema...price regulators...or similar  ) are trying to drive up the cost of 3D movies as if it didn't drain the wallet already.  I don't mind 2D but 3D is just awesome.  I can't really see the point in non-action movies in 3D though.  soon they'll have stand up comedy...

It's of no interest to me, and here's why:

1.  I don't want to wear special glasses when watching TV.

2.  For the last 50 years or so, everything has been filmed in 2D and there isn't enough content to make it worth the extra money.

3.  There's got to be some reason for me to continue going to the theater, which I enjoy.

When there's more content than Avatar and Monsters Vs Aliens, and we have some way of getting the effect without glasses I'll start to consider it.

Maybe a new re-edit of the Star Wars movies in 3D would inspire me, but short of that, I'll wait until they hit the main stream, if they hit the main stream.  My father still has an awesome laser disk player my uncle bought when they were the latest and greatest thing in the early 80's....

my dad bought a projection screen tv back in the 80's....the one with three light orbs that projected the image onto a big plastic screen and some video player that had a record size disc to play in it. Half way thru the movie you had to flip it over to side b. My dad was always buying needles for the thing. Being the reverse engineer at a young age i tore into one and i was a big record in a sleeve.

In fact, I've heard (don't know if it's true or not) that that was the main reason Betamax did not catch on because there was no porn for it. Although is was technically much better than the VHS which became the standard at the time.

3D video games actually already exist, been around for a year or so.

Yes I know 3D games are already available, as are laptops with built in 3D displays. My point was that as an application 3D games make more sense than 3D movies/ television.

I agree a lot of people are just getting sucked into the fad and hopefully it will drive normal TV prices down. The only 3D tech. that is of any potential is the ones where you don't need any glasses, it's all handled by the screen itself. I know a few companies are working on that, and at that point it may be a feasible option, but until then it's just a fad that requires goofy glasses and suckers the sheep into wasting their money.

Thing is tvs are being built as 3D ready...such as it's there ifinya want to use it. They aren't 3D only and you gotta buy the glasses in a seperate starter kit should you choose to go the 3D route.

I think it will do little to drive down prices as most newer flatscreens have or soon shall have a LAN port for networking Pandora, Netflix, weatherbug and some other widgets, 3D capabilities, USB ports and multiple HDMI-VGA-PC ports.

It's a PITA to run 140 seperate cat5 cables in the ceiling -one for each TV displayed on the walls--label them, punch them down and tie them into a patch panel with my big hands.
