Steel quality???
on: August 24, 2008, 06:29:51 AM
There have been mentioned a couple of times the steel quality that are used in various MT by leathers and number. I have no idea what those number means and what’s special or different with the various steel types. So, could you guys be so kind and try too explain this too me like I’m 4 years old?
There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

For the most part, the various numbers thrown around mean sweet sod all, since every other company has invented the "perfect" steel with precise volumes of carbon, iron, chromium, and whatever else they throw in.

It takes far more than what I know of metalsourcery (I can't spell the real word with the "U"s and stuff in it) to know what % of each material adds what good qualities.

here's what Spyderco has to say about it:

That Spyderco chart is very good, gives some great information.

Wikipedia has a fair amount of information on the subject, with a good few useful links to read a little around the subject.  Have a look:

We hear a lot about how hard a particular steel is, but what happens to it when the Rust Monster comes around?

(Image removed from quote.)

Just disembowel it with a blade made from H1 steel, the beast won't stand a chance.
