My first SOG, Recommendations?
on: March 29, 2010, 04:53:15 PM
I am considering saving my pennies for a SOG.  I have been eye-ing the powerlock for sometime, and I think it may be the one.  What is the best starter SOG?  I am looking for something comparable to a Swisstool or LM Blast.

I would say go for the Powerlock 2.0, I love my Powerlock but the exposed gears can be a real pain sometimes so I would go for the version with the gear covers.
There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

Yes, and the piano locking system is good... just don't use WD40 on your tool... if not it'll tool- clump anyway. ::)

Either this, or a Paratool would be my suggestion :)

I have a powerlock.  A quite irresistable tool, minus the tool clumping and digging gears.  for that I'd go with the 2.0.  Though I can't speak about the improvements, I'm sure Its a little better than the current.

How about a Pocket Power Plier? Small, compact, and easy to customize.

I probably will go with a 2.0, because i can't stand things digging into my hand, that is part of why I don't own a Skeletool anymore.  I haven't looked at the paratool yet, but I will.  Thanks for all the replies guys!

I think that's a good choice tbh. The Powerlock is the seminal SOG really, with SOG's claim to fame, i.e. compound leverage.

I like the Paratool as it's smaller (and pocketable), and has a natty way of folding up. Natty is good sometimes :tu:

Knowing me I'll end up with both.  I don't have the funds right now but when I do they will be burning a hole in my pocket.

If your aim is to build a collection, I'd say that between those two, you will have "experienced" SOG.

Of course, as tends to be the case, all their really good tools have been discontinued  ::) My favourite SOGs would be the Switchplier and the Toolclip - both of which are increasingly difficult to get hold of now.
I used to come here a lot.

I really like the idea of compound leverage and tool swap-ability.  Can't wait to get my hands on one.  Now, which first, the SOG or the LM Crunch?  or Pulse?  Darnit, too many choices!

I know!  It is the hardest decision to make!  I don't have the funds for either, and I won't for a while, but I really want them both.  I guess my new swisstool will have to hold me over for a while.

I probably will.  I don't know how though, it is really expensive.  I guess I will have to trade my Blast (and some other stuff) for it or something.  I don't think I will wanna let go of my Swisstool once it gets here, unless its for a spirit of some sort.  I really liked my spirit and I regret getting rid of it.  The blast is solid, but I think I like the powerlock more.

Still looking here, should I go for the S60 or a LM St300?  And are they both very heavy feeling on your belt?  That is probably what's holding me back, I don't want my new MT to sit in a drawer because it feels too heavy.

I picked th S60, for now.  I am probably going to get a St300 next, and maybe a PPP down the road.  It depends, I thought the PPP had the uncomfortable handles like the PST?  If that's the case it will have to wait a while.  If not, it may jump ahead of the ST300 simply because of the pocketability.
