My two are not yet old enough but I have fond memories of the scouts as a lad. I was lucky enough to be part of quite a large troop with good facilities, I made a lot of friends, learnt a lot of useful stuff and as a bonus had a lot of good times
Make sure to have a chat with the leaders. A good leader will make a troop. We didn't have any bad ones but the best was a young chap (early twenties) called Andy, by the time he left (redundancy, new job meant he had to move ) we had the largest troop for miles and a waiting list.
My oldest daughter is invited to a scout meeting in about a week, so she can see if it's anything for her..
cheers guys, i told coral all about it today and showed her there web site, she is very happy about it, so it looks like a good idea

We just have to remember it's for girl scouts and not for the Zombie-Apocalypse..
I feel sorry for your kids, they will be weighed down by 50kg of gadgets on trips
Cubs was OK but Scouts was much better, two week camps, more "energetic" games. All helped by a little more danger
