How useful is a corkscrew on a SwissChamp really?

Answer:  VERY!

Tonight, I decided to try out the corkscrew on my Cybertimer 41 (Cybertool 41 which is basically a SwissChamp size).  Did a fantastic job.  Better than the Leatherman Juice and just as good as the smaller sized Vics. Definitely better than my Wenger S557.

In short, the large sized Vics are just fine for wine bottle opening duty.  :salute:

I could never pop a cork with a hand corkscrew...last time I tried I ended up in the shop using a pry bar, towels, gloves and goggles :P

Maybe the wine I buy has exceptionally long corks..

I used mine on many different wines: French, Spanish, Italian and Californian with out any problems. Yes it takes little effort to start the cork to move, but after all I am old (almost 51) with rheumatoid arthritis.

Gotta put the screw in far enough so you can lever against the bottle lip.  Technique is everything.  8)

  That sounds like it was fun to watch!  Also sounds suspiciously like my own Vic wine opening endeavors. :D

I find that often I pull for a few seconds without anything happening and then it starts to slip and comes out quite easily. Patience is important :)

We all know what happens when I'm expected to open wine...but admittedly I didn't use the Vic one, just the LM.  Thanks for the heads up Mr. Whippy.  :)

I do find the modern synthetic 'corks' can be a PITA to get moving, as Mr.W says though if you screw the SAK right in and use it likes a waiter's friend it can help a lot.  Never did have an issue with a real cork (other than breaking sometimes but that's not the SAKs fault).
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

you can easily take it out using the knife as a lever but doing that damages a little bit the linner, not a big thing just a small notch, ill post a pic later.
i have use my champion to take a couple of corks with no problem but the real hero is a dedicated spartan for wine bisnes :D   :drink:

well here the pics : spartan and champion

+1 on the corkscrew being usefull. Last house warming party I went to I opened three bottles of wine with my swisschamp. Never had any problems to date. Agreed though that the new synthetic corks are a PITA. Time and patience my lad, that's all it takes.

It doesn't matter if it's useful or not, all SAK's have to have them and that's just it.  :D

I have used a SAK corkscrew to open wine a couple of times in the past and although it works, it's not very easy. Then, a week or so ago I was at a friends house and the wine opener was MIA. I used my Charge PE blade to open the bottle quite easily.

I think now that even it I had a SAK with a corkscrew on me I'd use the SAK blade to open the bottle. My friends and I were amazed at how well it worked.

I saw a video of this being done somewhere (probably here) but I can't find it now.

How exactly do you go about opening it with a blade?  Do you push the cork in the bottle or twist..or cut it out?

Man, I wish I could find that video... but... What you do is wiggle/push the blade all the way through the cork. Then twist and pull at the same time. The cork should glide right out with a satisfying "POP".

Tim Leatherman starred in it . I see two problems , possible blade breakage , and you will have a bit ofa problem recorking with a split cork . Never had a problem with SAK corkscrews .

As a kid I came across many folding pocket knives and they all had corkscrew.
I agree pocket folding knife is not a pocket knife with out one.
