Somewhat else.  Although I have heard of maybe 4 of these groups, I couldn't identify anything by any of them. 

I like classical music af all kinds, opera, jazz, folk, "classic rock" from the '50s-60s-70s, very occasionally current pop music.

I have over 20 gigs of mp3's on my hard drive, and I listen to all kinds of things.  I have everything from Jack DeMello to Slayer, Kenny Rogers to Steve Vai, Elvis (Presley and Costello), Leonard Cohen, Metallica from the cool era as well as the more current metrosexual phase, and some Classical stuff.  One of the greatest tragedies of the modern age is that we'll never hear the brilliant music penned by Mozart, Back and Handel played by the men themselves.  It seems unfair really- I always wondered how their renditions of their own masterworks would sound.

I think anyone who has a fondness for Classical music should at least try listening to Evanescense. Amy Lee has a fantastic voice, and despite the modern sounds and stylings, the music follows some distinctly Classical tones.  Truly one of the best bands of the last ten years IMHO.

I'm also glad that Carlos Santana has A) become popular again and B) stopped attempting to write his own lyrics.  The man speaks with a six string, and should stay there.  He's absolutely brilliant, and nowadays when he teams up with other big name writers/performers, the music that results is mind boggling.  Look at "Smooth" and "Just Feel Better" as examples.

On the other side of the coin is another guy I consider a musical genius, despite his complete musical ignorance.  The infamous John Fogerty, heart and soul behind Creedence Clearwater Revival, the man who knew three chords, but couldn't tell you what they were, was perhaps one of the greatest musician of the modern age.  He couldn't tell you why something sounded right, but the man embodied the spirit of music, playing from instinct, and rocketed CCR to the top.  The three other guys, one of whom was his brother, were jealous and kicked him out, then later upset because he was continuing to outwrite and outsell the rest of them, tried to sue him for sounding too much like he did when he was with CCR.  The courts, in a rare display of intelligence, pointed out that since he wrote all of the CCR catalogue of songs, it was no wonder he continued to sound like CCR.  They also pointed out that there was nothing immoral or illegal about sounding like oneself...

And, if you like Death Metal, and have a good connection, check out www.totalrock.com which is a hardcore metal station in London.  One of my best friends built their site and still occasionally appears on the air alongside his wife, who is one of their top DJ's.

Mind you, above all else, the one song that gets me rocking (mostly because I can't dance!) is Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf.  I think that song embodies a whole generation of what rock was about.  Sure it doesn't make much sense, but it sounded good, which I think was the whole point at the time.

The closest modern song to embodying that feeling (and remember, I am not exactly young myself, so "modern" may mean different things to me than you!) would be Seasons in the Abyss by Slayer, which I am very disappointed they didn't play live when I saw them last year.  Of course the concert was great, and it was cool to see Dimebag before he was killed.  I never cared for Pantera, but since I like all the other stuff he did, I guess that means I just wasn't a Pantera fan.  Stretching his wings with some solo projects before GodSmack really allowed him to show what he had, and i think that was pretty cool.

Plus, as a major KISS fan, I really had to agree with his taste in music!

Like I said, my tastes are pretty broad!  I even have an old, uncensored version of Cop Killer, an album that was banned from Canada.  Quite frankly I think Ice T is a hypocritical, money grubbing moron who exploits his fans, but then I guess many of the more "hardcore" rappers are the same way.  And I think his band, Body Count was an extension of him, and that they were no talent hacks who only managed to have any success by pretending they were something they could never hope to be.  Which is why we still listen to the Allman brothers, and yet half of you are asking who the heck Body Count was!  If you want to know more, ask Ernie C next time you go through Drive Thru...

Not that I have anything against rap.  I'll admit, I wasn't a fan for many years, but nowadays as I tend to explore the music more than the pathetic messages, some of it is pretty darned cool.  Coolie, who I always thought was an Ice T wannabe, has turned out some pretty good stuff, as have some other Old Schoolers like Maestro (formerly known as Maestro Fresh Wes), LL Cool J (anyone remember Mama said Knock You Out?) and perhaps one of my all time favorites of the genre, Big Daddy Kane.

Lately I have been into what I like to call Cross Genre Covers, which are becoming much more frequent.  Celine Dion covered ACDC's You Shook Me All Night Long, Ozzy covered Rocky Mountain Way and Stayin Alive, Hayseed Dixie has done Country and Western versions of many Rap and Heavy Metal songs, Primus has always played silly versions of other people's songs (you will die when you hear Gin & Juice from Snoop Dogg played on a banjo!), and even Pat Boone, the old crooner got in on the action, releasing an album of Heavy Metal meets Lounge Lizard covers from ACDC, Alice Cooper and Metallica.  I also have a bunch of covers of 60's acid rock songs, TV themes and popular music from various punk groups, many of which are from Jello Biafra's new band... although their name escapes me right now, you may remember him from the DayGlo Abortions...

Can you tell that music is one of my great passions in life?  No?  Go listen to Kenny Rogers and the First Editions song Just Dropped In to see a whole new side of the Gambler and you'll see what I mean!

Then there's just good old fashioned straightforward rock that really no one should object to, done to perfection by the guys who wrote it, recorded it, produced it, played it and made it what is it.  Often covered, but never duplicated, bands like Rush, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, KISS and Lynrd Skynrd will always be seen as the real definitions of art in the modern age.  Many bands come up with groundbreaking music, but then disappear when that sound becomes mainstream because that's all they have.  Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Mick Jagger, Paul Stanley, Geddy Lee all manage to survive in an industry that's all about something new and shocking.  And, they do more than survive... Every few years they come up with something else that puts the world on it's ear... like this:

My music tastes vary widely.  I seem to go in phases as to what type of music I listen too.  For a while it may be country, then rap, then heavy metal, then back to country, etc.

My three favorite bands of all time are Danzig, Staind, and GWAR.  I saw GWAR do an interview on a tv show about 20 years ago and thought they were funny as hell.  I've been a fan ever since...

I really dig female lead singers... expecially female metal singers

I was recently turned on to Lacuna Coil by a friend of mine.  All I have right now is one song called To Myself I Turned.  Pretty cool stuff.  I'm also wishing Billy Talent was around when I was in high school.  Songs like Nothing To Lose really embody my teen years, which is probably why I am in such bad shape these days!

It's really funny to look back on some of the older, "risque" stuff from our generation and before.  I can see how guys like Elvis and Jimmy Dean were considered "Bad Boys" and see how they would be considered almost pillars of the community by today's standards!  I also find it fascinating to go to concerts like George Thorogood & the Delaware Destroyers or Ted Nugent, guys who embodied the worst society had to offer, and see your local bank manager, insurance agent and financial planner there, grooving along!

I think Hendrix would be proud to see what has become of "Devil's Music" and how it's being seen and appreciated for what it is nowadays.  Of course what amazes me is that each generation had to grow up with the stigma of their music being "evil" and yet they don't seem all that tolerant of the next generation's music.  Seems to me there's something about learning history and repeating it that they missed?

Oh, and I forgot one of my other all time favorites...  just a little band from England you may have heard of... THE WHO!  I listened to nothing but My Generation for about a week straight once!  I spent months at a bar doing nothing but drinking every night and playing the TOMMY pinball machine until closing.  To this day I think it's a pretty close contest between how much I spent on beer, and how much I spent on the damn game.  Pinball wizard I ain't!   

Female metal singers?  Like Lita Ford or Joan Jett?  I had my first sexual experience to "Hate Myself For Loving You."  Luckily there was no one around to experience my lust for a woman on an album cover!   I still think that Lita Ford's videos for Close My Eyes Forever with Ozzy, and Kiss me Deadly rank up there as some of the absolute hottest moments ever recorded on film, and given the amount of pornography available nowadays, that's really saying something!

Steven Tyler had a gorgeous daughter simply because he sleeps with supermodels... although there's a funny story about that too.  Apparently Liv's mother got around, and for the first few years of her life, Liv's last name was Jagger.    Easy mistake to make I guess!
