Tanks and stuff.
on: April 24, 2010, 03:11:11 PM
Ever since I was a young lad, I always had a fascination with weapons. Probably derived from my complete set of Weapons and Warefare encyclopedia which is a bit dog eared from usage when I was a kid. I found this sort of stuff fascinating as I always had an interest in history, but more so in tanks in general.

Anyhow, I came across this nice video of a neat collection. Rather impressive. Somehow, the gents philosophy in collecting is a bit like mine.

Now for the reason why I am looking into such things now. I got a bit of the RC bug lately, and decided last night to get one of the 1/16 airsoft tanks off of eBay. A German Tiger with metal gears, sprockets, and track. Ordered from Toronto...so it shouldn't take too long to get it in.

Yep it is :)

And there a rare beastie alright :) I can't believe the Germans actually gave them a combat role during the Polish campaign :o

I have a huge softspot for Russian armour, and German tank hunter's like the Hetzer and Jagdtiger et al :)

He's a brave man then, as most of them really didn't compare favourably to the German equivalents :salute:

Agreed. They were outgunned. Thankfully the German's didn't have a supply line to mention after a while, otherwise it may have turned out quite differently.

Whoey, loved those photographs. :salute:

Not just outgunned sadly :-\

The armour was poor in the Cruiser type tanks, and all the early war period tanks had to put up with chronically overstressed and unreliable Liberty engines :(

True enough.

Hmmm....When I started to look into RC tanks, I thought that 1/16 was huge. I mean, these tanks are 56 to 63 cm long. Little did I know.  :o

I just found some larger ones.

How about 2/5th scale that you can get in and drive around.

If that isn't big enough...3/4 scale anyone?  :o

I'd often wondered how the S tank would of worked if the Swedes suddenly had to confront masses of T64, T72 and T80's :-\

But they's bought the Leopard 2 (best tank in the world, bar none imo) now, so I don't think even they are convinced of the Tank Destroyer concept anymore :)

The S looks menacing alright, but it would be a pain (I think) to have to move the whole tank just to re-line up a shot at a moving target. :P I've always figured that the attackers could get close by simply by advancing in a wide zig-zag pattern, and keeping up a good rate of speed while moving diagonally (if that makes sense)

I think that must be the conclution the Swedes came to too :)

In WWII tank hunter's were only ever truly effective in ambushes, once you knew where they were, they were relatively easy to counter :)

Bob you sure that S-tank is not English  , from the look of that big puddle of oil like substance under its right track it sure looks English  :P. If we could find out if the tank has on again off again & then off completely electrics that would confirm its country of origin  :P :D :D.

Did they pair the S-tank with conventional tanks too cover their back, side, slightly left of center......  :D :D

Though tanks are cool. I was always partial to the truck, jeeps, and land rover modified, used by the LRDG, SAS,& PPA

Is that why your lot bought our Centurion then :P

They did use this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ikv_91 but it's pretty much only really a reconnaissance vehicle, but could probably of been able to take a T55/T62 in an ambush :)

So if you all had to pick the greatest tank of all time. What would it be?

Somewhat predictably I'd plump for the original T35, as that was the first tank to truly incorporate all 3 principals of the AFV holy trinity :)
