Just curious, the factory colours on Alox knives are all type 2 (not hard) anodized right?

Correct.
It appears the Limited Edition 2010 Damascus Pioneer will have Hard Anodized Black scales.  Hopefully that was not a typo; if true, it will be another factory first.

Hard Anodized??  Or triple hard anodized(hence Scibeer's HAIII designation ;) )??

When it come to 'standards' there is only one HA also known as Type 3.  HAIII is an apparant redundant statement that is an incorrect specification.  There is no such thing as triple hard anodized, it either meets HA spec or not.

Of course people are free to anodize and not follow the standard, or the standard rating system (which happens often), but generally one only does this to mislead their customers.

I've asked +B if he can clarify the rating for the anodizing, it very well could be a typo, or sloppy specification,  but I'm hoping on a knife with such a hard steel blade they saw fit to also make the rest of the knife a durable as possible.

I hope I won't be disapointed, but there is little information coming direct from Victorinox on this item.

Sad news... based on feedback from Roger it's not HA, just the regular Victorinox anodizing.  When it comes to color/finish they have very high quality, but I don't know why they never went for an HA process.   Their Silver wears very nice, maybe they thought that was good enough.

My (admittedly limited) understanding is that proper type 3 anodising doesn't lend itself well to many dyes, hence the choice of Scibeers scale colour I'm guessing.  So if you want red, blue, gold etc it won't be in real type 3. :-\

Ya, you can't get colored HA, but Black, or even better Natural, would be fine.  Since this Damascus knife is Black they could have (and should have)done HA for it.

Why is that?  I think you might change your mind.

I wish Victorinox would give more information on when they will release some to the US market.

Just another note about anodizing.  Hard Anodizing is also called type 3 anodizing, so yes, HA3 or HAIII is redundant.  You can get it in colours, such as gold, blue, purple etc, but the colours are much darker usually and not as bright and vibrant as type 2 (something to do with how the dies interact during anodizing etc, but don't quote me on that).

In any case, type 3 is a lot more durable than type 2, but just usually doesn't look as nice initially.  So I guess it's all about looks on the store shelf for Victorinox knives.  I mean, it's not like Celidor looks that good after heavy use.
