cheap beater watches on a budget, that look nice,
on: April 27, 2010, 10:38:58 AM
Ok ive had a few beater over the years, and more have been mechanical for the last 2 years, i usually pay no less than £20-40 but due to mountain biking i decided i wanted something with in quartz due to the mechanical watches getting shaken about a lot, although never really effecting them to badly,

ok i only got this this am, it cost me £12 posted off of ebay, its a basic quartz movement but ok as have a few in my bits box and they all run well and kept good time, ok its a omega seamaster copy (homage)  :D build is very good and ive had some nice watches in the past to compare to it, its much lighter than my daily user seiko 6309 but possibly a good thing for cycling, now it has a screw in crown and a screw down case back, time will tell how water resistant it is, i changed the strap for 2 reasons, i hate bad Finnish on a SS bracelet and the ends was not finished nicely (open ends ) plus 2nd even at its tightest fit it flopped around on my wrist and i hate that personally , so ive fitted another bracelet for now but i have a rubber sports strap on its way , its a nice thickness this watch and feels nice on the wrist, and TBH for £12 it seems like a bargain, but time will tell, it will get abuse, the bezell clicks counter clock wise, ive removed the film now from the bezel lol, i like these hands as you can see the date window even when the hands cover the window, of course copied from the seamaster, as for the lume on the hands and dial ill let you know after tonight, in the past ive had G-shocks, and other casio divers and sports watches, alll good other than a few that leaked water, this wont get used much other than cycling and sports, i wanted something that looked nice and didnt cost a bomb, and this pretty much fits the bill,

ill update as i use it,

also im hungry for Greek cheese for some reason  ;)

paul

some pics, sorry film still on the bezel as took it off the crystal and the case back,

on the beach lol

a few spec details,
MOVEMENT : JAPAN QUARTZ MOVEMENT not looked yet ? (they all say japan but usually cheaper quartz)ill take a look

CASE : BLUE BEZEL STAINLESS STEEL SCREW BACK CASE   (looks like ali to me)

CROWN :  SCREW CROWN (yes)

5 ATM WATER RESISTANT (APPROX 150 FEET) hmm ?  ::)

DIAL : ceramic blue wave dial,

BRACELET : STAINLESS STEEL BRACELET (yes but crude) changed,

oh yeah swiss design  :D

miyota movements are very accurate , in fact i bet it will keep better time than my seiko 6309, i used to set my other auto's and mechanical watches by a miyota quartz in the past,  :tu:

Modern mechanical watch
non-certified    +/-10    +/-5    +/-2    99.9942%

Modern quartz watch
non-certified (normal)    +/-2    +/-1    +/-0.1    99.9998%

just weighed it and it weighs  100g the same as my seiko 6309 ,although that has a nylon nato so would weigh more with a SS bracelet on it, so a nice weight  :tu:

Very nice Zed!  Biking is the primary reason I got the GShock Mudman.  I prefer analog watches, but this one was just too tough to resist.  Great looking watch, Zed.

cheers mate, yeah ive had a few G's and there great for MTB'ing and general cycling etc, i just fancied seeing how one of these would hold up, i did the same last year with a 2 Chinese auto movement watches, one a herc BUBU and the other a slava, the herc won hands down, as the slava had no screw down case back or crown, so leaked badly, the herc was around £45 but i paid £20 for it, the slava was £10 posted from HK, i highly recomend hercs as a nice auto on a budget, plus the aftermarket help is great,

here is a side shot of the spymaster

and the back, with rolex strap  ::)  :D

Yeah, I was wondering how it would compare to my Victorinox with ETA quartz movement.  It averages about +/-.5 second per month from my experience.  I compare it to NIST and my Casio WaveCeptor frequently.

Not bad for $20!

well its still keeping good time, TBH it has the same movement that was in a old Kahuna i brought back in the middle 90's and that was still working well after about 6-7 years of abuse and that watch had no screw in crown, i know it fogged up now and then but kept ticking, so its a pretty robust movement,

here is a size comparison next to my much treasured 6309,

That is a good looking watch mate, you've got me thinking about something new now.  ::)  Perhaps i just need to dig out an older watch I have, see if it works, and see if it would benefit from a new strap.

I tried a new battery in my old (~'79) Timex LCD the other day.  No go, its dead :(  Shame, it was my first digital as a kid.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.
