A cool thing just happened!
on: May 06, 2010, 02:01:48 PM
So, there I was, at this very desk, working away and I heard a thud on the window, which is about 2 feet from me. I looked up just in time to understand that a bird had flown into the window, and just about saw it fall vertically.

We have three cats in this house, one of which I knew to be in the garden, so I ran downstairs and outside to find the cat looking around the corner of the house inquisitively, and a small bird, flat on it's back with legs twitching. I picked it up and shoved the cat in the house, to prevent my new feathered friend becoming cat food, before placing him on a table and running in to get my camera.

So, I stood guard for a couple of minutes, and Tweety just lay on the table with his beak on the surface. So I thought I'd have a look at him (her?) and see if there was any visible damage to legs or wings. "He" was very compliant throughout my examination, quite clearly stunned.

Had to operate the camera with my left hand only - sorry it's a bit blurred :)

So, I stood there for a few more minutes, and Tweety seemed to perk up a bit, standing up properly and starting to look around a bit - but he wouldn't fly off. So, I put him on the branch of a tree, high enough and thin enough to deter an assault by cats.

I watched him as he slowly became a little more active, starting to move side to side a little, and then when I reached towards him again, he jumped (with wing assistance) to another branch, then another, then to the next tree and off he went :tu:

This was the last shot I got of him as made his escape!

I know nothing about birds - is he a Finch maybe? I can hear him singing outside my window right now!!
I used to come here a lot.

The bird is probably retelling the story back at the nest as we speak :D

Sounds as if he was lucky. Lucky he didn't smash his brains in on the window and lucky you were there to chase the pesky cats  :tu:

+1 for Dave's karma  :salute:

Too cute and good job.  Not sure what kind of bird it is, but I do know it is not a finch.  Hope "Tweety" stays away from windows from now on :tu:

Great photos Dave :tu:

I remember that happening in a maths class once except it brained itself trying to get out.  The teacher freaked out ::)  I rescued the wee beast and took it outside.  By the time I got down all the starirs and to the front door it was getting quite lively again and trying to peck its way out of my hands :)

My mother had me cleaning the outside of one of her windows on Monday as an oofing great dirty pigeon had done similar.  The mark it left was almost photographic in detail, individual feathers, beak and an eye all clearly visible.

In sadder news, on her daily commute my wife has so far taken out one pigeon and two pheasants this month :(

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Good job Dave. Nice to see someone take the time to help an animal in need.

You'd not notice the difference on the front of ours ::)    Could be worse, they get deer wandering about on that road.  Last year a mature stag wandered in front of a council wagon.  Caused chaos, not too much vehicle damage but there was this this hoofing big body blocking half the road and its a busy single single carriageway A road.
