Coghlan's sierra saw
on: May 06, 2010, 09:40:48 PM
Just picked one up, it's only $8, and say it's made of SK5 steel (i.e. cold steel trailmaster) and hard chrome plated. Duno the hardness of it, and the mechanism is a bit clumsy, but seems like a lot of steel for the price. Blade is 7", made in Korea.

Anybody has experience with it?

It's a Canadian outdoor equipment distributor, you can find their stuff in pretty much every store in Canada and u.s.. Maybe they don't have much of a presence in European market?

It looks pretty descent for the price.

I'd like to know how it compares to the Gerber.

Just tried it on 2x4, it cuts like a devil, I think even faster than the fiskars saw I have. The blade is thinner which would've contributed to that. It's more flexible but I haven't had any problem so far.

Don't have a Bahco to compare, but at 1/4 of the price I think I'm willing to settle for this!

Years and years ago the Coglan's Sierra Saw had a wooden handle and was made by Opinel...they still sell a camp knife branded for them.

I don't know how long ago the switch in country of origin was made...but that's when the plastic handle appeared.

I don't think I've ever seen the wooden handle version, but I guess they switched for cost reasons, no way an Opinel made version would sells for $8.

It could have been costs...I remember seeing the wooden handled version in the '70s when I was starting out in backpacking.
